Recently I noticed a leak in my gas tank. I removed the tank and found corrosion all over the sender unit and the gauge. I am wondering whether I should replace the sender unit with a new one or get the tank reconditioned at a local repair shop. Anyone have any ideas?

Depends if the leak was from the tank or the rusty lines coming out of the tank. The common problem with the rusted out lines is to replace the fuel pump bracket (the part that the lines come out of) with a dealer replacement part ($60). Be sure to transfer your electric fuel pump over to the new bracket and be careful disconnecting the pressure hose from the hard line.

I bought a new fuel pump bracket off of ebay, and it was slightly different than the one I had. It was shorter and lacked one of the hard lines I needed (the evap line that runs to the charcoal canister) Well I used it, cause from what I remember the a new one from the dealer is much much more expensive than $60. Just can't let my tank run as low on fuel lol. As for the metal line I needed, I drilled the top of the fuel pump bracket and welded in a metal line (brake line), and its worked great so far.

The shorter bracket was for a 2WD tank (they're not as deep/big as the 4wd tank). The bracket was bought like 5 years ago so maybe the price went up due to inflation, or I found a good dealership to buy parts from (Carlson Toyota in Coon Rapids, MN). The fuel pump should be separate from the bracket, as the pump alone back then cost $110 (V6 and 22RE use the same pump).

the rusty sender unit is a common problem for these trucks...and the best thing to do is replace them...

I had a pump replaced about 2 years ago. Just the pump was $198.00
