Fuel, spark, ect problems
Hello, i posted before about my 1988 toyota truck 3.0 4x4 problems, well the problems are still about the same, i thought the fuel pump was not cutting on because of the computer looking like it had water damage. I have replaced the old fuel pump that i found out it still works, have replaced the computer, with a used one, but in very good condition that i had to drive 60 miles to get. I know i can jump start the fuel pump by using a paper clip and touching one side thats B++ and the other on the FP side, well it wont cut on, it only cuts on when i stick a wire down the Fp and B++ side and hook it up to the positive side of the battery. WEll I get into my truck while the fuel pump is on and try to start it, all it do's is turns over,. What my question is,the fuel pump will not run without me doing what i did, so if i can jump start my fuel pump where there if gas getting to the motor, why wont it start! Is there a relay that runs the fuelpump and spark, fire, to my motor? Im puzzled and i need help quickly please, thankyou.

There's a bypass switch in the AFM. This jumps the fuel pump circuit during starting. Since the fuel pump is running, but no start. I would look at the AFM. If it's not working, the engine won't run, either. The only spot I can think that does both fuel and spark is the ECU.

That's why I asked you about spark. If you have no spark, it may be signal related and the most likely cause of signal is at the distributor. Spark and fuel generally aren't related on the toyota, but it's a good indication that you've got a deeper electrical problem if you don't have either.
The AFM has a "switch" on it. When the AFM gets cranking air flow, it closes a switch, turning on te fuel pump. If you have a hole in your intake track somewhere, the flapper may not open. Otherwise, do the AFM diagnostics in your FSM, they may help....

The (A)ir (F)low (M)eter is the big thing with the flapper by the air filter. I don't know specifically about the 3.0, but on the 22R-E there a big black hose that goes between it and throttle body. There is a procedure to check it out with a ohm-meter or by voltage the ECU. Do you have a set of manuals or at least a Chiltons or Haynes manual? There's a ton of thread about it, try searching here or through Google.
