Fuel Sending Unit question

I've got a 1986 Toyota 4x4 and had to replace the gas tank and sending unit cause of extreme rust. The gas tank and sending unit i got was only about a year old but the sending unit only has two wire, being different than the stock 3 wires. I assume its older, but my question is, is there a way to cut the plug of and straight wire the two wire into three wire harness? Maybe bypass an unnecessary wire? Anything would help.

Be nice to know what year the tank came out of if the sending unit was with the tank.

My boy friend ran off with my 86 Electrical manual but I can guess the 3 wire one might have had the low fuel light.

while the 2 wire does not.

I would put some sort of plug in there it would be a pain removing the tank other wise

I've got the new tank in and the wires are just sitting there. The tank is the same size as the one that came out, just different sending unit, i assume its out of a first gen yota because the dude i got it from had a few.

the 2 wire sending unit is for a non-sr5 truck. 3rd wire is for the low fuel light. May or may not be accurate as far as level goes. Depends on what year the tank came out of and how it's shaped, just because it's the same capacity 17 ish gallons doesn't mean the sending unit is gonna show accurately as there were several shapes and what not.

the sending unit came in the tank which was oem for the truck it came off of. the truck it came out of was a 85. im not worried about the low fuel light, but the wires a different colors, could i bypass the low fuel wire and straight wire the two others together?

Hope that some one with the 1985 Electrical manual is nice enough to tell you what wire is which.

You have 4 wires that can be joined but only one combination will work good luck

I have not had a working sending unit in my 87 4runner for about 5 years

I just reset the trip odometer every time I fill it with gas it gets around 125 miles I fill up again. It is always within a 1 gallon range each time.

It works for me I have the new sending unit just have not replaced it

Did you ever resolve the issue?

I'm curious which two of the three wires need connected for the two wire sending unit to work

I had a '65 El Camino that I managed to get the float arm pegged in maybe the up position, because it started pegging "off-scale high". Had a 20 gallon tank and I got 15 mpg, so about 250 miles after a refuel w/topoff, I started looking for a gas station...
