fuel pump question
I've read many times that people can hear their fuel pumps.
I've also read that some can hear the pump when they turn the key to the run position.
One of my cars is like that. If I turn the key to run I hear the pump fire up until the rail is pressurized an then it turns off until I start it.
Question is - Does anyone else NOT ever hear their fuel pump?
Reason I ask is that especially when it's cold it takes a few seconds to fire up. By cold I mean -20.
Even when it's warm out it doesn't fire up like all other fuel injected vehicles I've had.
not a biggy - just curious

I've never heard a peep from my fuel pump and it does the same as yours when starting up. Maybe 5 seconds turn over before it starts, possibly 3 seconds before it kicks. I'm like you in owning a vehicle before where as soon as the key is turned on you can hear a buzz, whine as system is pressurized. This one is quiet, maybe normal.

Same here- when I went from the OEM to the Walbro I can now hear it, but only when I'm outside the car while it's running and I put my head near the fuel tank.

1) I can't hear my pump when it's running (22re)
2) You won't hear it in the on position because it's not running. Air flow across the AFM is actually what trips the switch that grounds the pump.

I broke down in a town about 30+ miles north of my home....loaded with a trailer. Was headed home and before I got out of that town the runner died. Figured it must be the fuel pump 'cause I was getting no fuel. At that time, I knew very, very little about my vehicle much less to know to listen for the fuel pump. Had it towed to a nearby O'reilly where I bought and aftermarket FP. I borrowed a few tools and swapped out the pumps. Still no go. It took calling to the fellow (a cert. Toy tech) that replaced my timing chain who had to come out and look at it. Fortunately, he was on his way out to that particular O'reilly. He couldn't figure it out and called his brother who was also a Toy tech. Found the problem! A corroded OCR switch...that had been installed upside down. He jumped it and it's run and been jumped since. Now, I turn the key on, the fuel pump comes and stays on. But, it's from O'reilly. The brand I do not remember. When it does come on it vibrates and rattles the whole dash! Next time...it's OEM...and a new relay. Before, I never heard it, and I would have noticed had it made noise. I can be anal that way..lol!

Starting my dads 91 V6 we never hear the fuel pump either. Same motor as yours and in the same conditions as I'm in Northwestern Ontario and right now its -33 without the windchill. I know my dads truck wont start but when we try to start it this cold we still never hear the fuel pump. My 82 on the other hand never has a problem starting.

Have you checked your cold start injector?
