Fuel Pump or Fuel Pressure Regulator?

1990 Toyota 4runner
Been trying to actually figure this one out for awhile. Wondering which part to replace first. My 4runner has trouble starting, and maybe by the 3rd try it will start but you can smell a very heavy gasoline smell, or even sometimes it a gas leak where I assume the damper is. The leak only happens if I repeatedly try to start the truck. there were times where I would open up the gas cap to release the pressure, put it back on then turn the key wait about 5sec and turn the truck on and it would automatically start up no problems. but the problem doesn't seem to be going away it seems like there is to much pressure build up which is causing the leak? but the leak only happens when I keep trying to turn the truck on. last week I turned it on since its been sitting took a little bit but started. no leaks just strong smell of gas. Anyone have an ideas on the problem?

If your damper is leaking, it's only going to get worse. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...octite-266710/.) And the way you'll find out is you'll see a giant fireball. From really close-up.

The reason you think it "only" leaks when you crank the truck is that once the truck starts, there is enough heat to vaporize the gasoline that is leaking. And the fumes are blown away as you drive. So test for the leak; I recomend you place a piece of brown paper towel (gasoline is so clear that it is hard to see on a white paper towel) under the damper. Start the fuel pump (jumper FP to B+, key-on) and wait 30 second. Pull the paper towel out quickly (on a warm day gasoline will evaporate away quickly.)

As for hard starting, that can be caused by a lot of problems. Check plug gap and condition. Check ignition timing. Remove the CSI (with the fuel line and wire connected), place it in a safe container, turn the key. (CSI only sprays if it's chilly; you don't say where you are or what the weather is like.)
