It's amazing how fast the exhaust temps go up. Since I got an EGT gauge I'm just amazed how fast the temps go up from a cold start to 900* F in no time at all. These engines must just breath fire or mine does anyway.

I agree. I just did a HG job on a 3VZE and the residual coolant burned almost immediately. It really had me concerned until it finally cleared up.

What are your thoughs on the coolant or residual chemicals being that the runner has been sitting for 5 years since it broke? I know water evaporates fairly quickly, but it surely leaves behind some of the chemical components, right?

I'm not really sure. But I doubt those chemicals would burn with that much smoke. Well Steam I mean. It had to have been steam the way it quickly evaporated.

You are probably right. Do the block test and see what happens. Maybe the Toyota gods will smile and make it clear up.

Have you had a chance to contact the guy that sold you the engine? Oh wait- you probably want to make sure it is actually a bad HG before pounding on his door.
