Fuel pressure gauge on fuel rail?

Has anyone fabricated a permanent fuel pressure gaugefor EFI? I got a used fuel rail and thought about tapping into it to monitor the pressure at the injectors. After searching a bit on yotatech and google, I am a bit confused as to the following:

1. Safety - too big a risk of having a fuel leak/spray?
2. Permanent placement/location of the gauge
3. best location to tap for pressure measurement
4. what max psi should I get for the gauge
5. material for fuel line (hose or harline)

4crawler would be a good person to ask. He put one on his 22re fuel rail. I do believe it's on his website as to exactly how he installed it.

Here's how Gadget did a fuel pressure gauge on his 5VZFE:

Hmm. I assume you want it dash mounted? If so, definately go with an electric gauge. More expensive but it keeps high-pressure fuel out of the cab. Wouldn't want that leaking on a radio If underhood, I'd cut the hardline and tap in a Tee fitting, then thread on the gauge. They're so light I don't believe there'd be an issue.

Edit: Found this guy online;

I think I am going to look for a used fuel rail and more specifically the large hollowed bolt which holds the fuel line on. The bolt head looks like it could be tapped through, having enough depth that I could screw in a hardline and then a pressure transducer. Just need to settle on the sensor to be used. I read where some american vehicles use the same sensor as they do for oil pressure. Might even try playing around with using the Toyota oil pressure I have off a 22RE. Didn't know it could handle that kind of pressure?

Well when rubber is resistant to oil, it's usually resistant to fuel as well. Since oil pressure and fuel pressure are both usually in the 30-50psi range, I can believe the same sensor can be used.

I copied 4crawler's deal - electric fuel pressure / oil pressure gauge... works well.

I have a diagnostic tool that does this. Tapping into the fuel line is easy by just using a special banjo bolt with a fitting on the end of it.

Where do you get this special banjo bolt?

I just tapped the end of the fuel rail for 1/8 npt. The cap on the end of the rail is probably 1/4-3/8's thick so I tapped it and used a 90* fitting to turn the sender up right away from the fire wall. I used an autometer elect full sweep fuel pressure gauge. My Fuel Pressure is 38@idle and 42@under load. My gauges site in one of Jeff Mosk's 3 gauge pillars.

Maybe I will snap a few pics and post them up later.

dcg9381, what pressure sender did you choose? I am looking at Auto Meter's fuel pressure sender ($99). Looks like this project is pretty expensive unless there are cheaper senders out there.

Ganoid, the full sweep guage from Auto Meter, is that mechanical or electric? Are you bringing the fuel plumbing into the cab of the truck?

If any of you have pics of the plumbing coming off the fuel rail and up to your gauge, would you post them so i can compare what you have done successfully with what I am considering?

Thanks,

Aaron

I used the "phantom series" full sweep electric gauge only because its the same style gauge as my wideband commander. The gauge was a bit expensive @$150 on Ebay. My plan is to install the special full sweep electric oil pressure sender and use a switch to swap the gauge between senders as I already have all 3 of my gauge pods full.

I don't recall the brand of gauge I used - it was a "generic" oil pressure sender/gauge from Summit or Jegs - it's digital with two 7 segment displays. I believe the sender was significantly under $99.. Like more like $40, but it's been a while.
