was doing the head gasket on my 22re all the head bolts came out fine except for one which decided to snap off in the head. The hole the bolt was in was full of carbon and the bolt was all pitted. I thought no big deal ill just pull the head off and unscrew the rest of the bolt. 3 hours later i finall was able to get the head off of the block, i tried penetrating oil and carb cleaner to free the head from around the bolt nothing was cutting it, i had to pry the head off with a prybar, needless to say now i have to send the head out and hope they can fix where i had to pry on it and i have to replace the timing chain guides that broke off when trying to remove the damn head
guess ill be out of a vehicle a little while

 

Man that sucks , I don't think I would have used a pry bar ,but I'm sure you tried everything else before that .

ya the block is ok. i checked it over

 

i tried everything else, ive never seen carbon this bad in a head bolt hole

 

I'm guessing the bolt in question was by #3 cylinder, exhaust?

 

ya second to the last bolt on the exhaust side, i take it there have been other incidents
