front tranny leak..

front tranny leak..
i thought i had a rear main leak but it turns out ive got a leak from the input bearing retainer housing gasket. the gasket is literally as thin as a sheet of paper. can i just clean it real good and then use gasket maker to seal er up? 
has anyone else had a leak from the same place? its not the input shaft seal....so you dont get mixed up.
o yea W56 tranny on an 88 22re 4x4
