Front Suspension Noise

95 PU 4wd 3.slow, totally stock

Okay here's the problem. Every now and then when I make a turn I hear this clank. it only happens once and a while. When I drive on rough dirt roads I also hear a clanking sound. I always thought it was my brake pads moving around.

So I took my truck to a Midas shop today and they discovered some "not normal" play where the CV shaft goes into the spindle. They showed me and it was some loose play. They said they would have to disassemble the hub to determine what's wrong. What do you guys/gals think?

$60 to tear it down and see what the problem is. I'm getting her ready for the upcoming camping and fishing season.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like it might be worn bushings.

X2.. Excessive play where the cv enters the spindle is caused by worn inner spindle bushings. When mine were worn out, I would get a very annoying rattle every time I went over the slightest bump.

ADD. Conversion to manual hubs has been on the list for a while.

Thanks for the replies.

Just got back from Midas. They said the rattle might be due to a missing part! The last people that had to remove the rotor was Sears, years ago. The missing part is said to be a spacer. I'm looking into this spacer.

The mechanic had the hub cover removed and I could move the axle shaft up and down with about 0.5 cm of play. The mechanic said once the hub cover is put back on the play should be minimal.

Eric, that's one good write up. Nice and detailed.

I had a clank too. You know what it was? My pass side swaybar endlink bushing.....was GONE! That's right, not even there!

Yanked off the sway bar, fixed
