I have decided to re run the ADD switch to the dash and weld the front diff. I have the diff out and the ADD removed, cover off and I don't know what to do next. I can handle the re wireing but I have never welded a diff and don't know what to do. Please Help.

weld the spider gears together and be sure you clean the crap out of all moving parts before you close it up.if you have not done it before you may want to have someone who has assist you so you dont build yourself a bomb in a pumpkin.

 

I am a pretty good welder and have a flux core mig. I just need a diagram or picture. Some people say to add a plate or something but I was worried about balance. Pics would be great.

Thanks, I saw that thread, read it and wondered if the front was any different. That is where I saw the plate and worried about balance. I know what a search is for but just need to know if the front if different than the back.

 

I dont see why it would be different. Front and rear diffs do the same thing.

And i cant wait to see if your add locker idea works.

 

You can also use a spider gear out of another 3rd.
Works just like the plate. but no with the welded front diff the unballanced is pro gonna be the last of your worries. Its not gonna turn worth a dang.

 

If I understand right he's got ADD front. He's gonna wire the switch up to basically make it an elocker. When the add disengages it should effectively make his front open again. Well half open one side axle will still be locked. Good idea if it works.

Man, a flux core? That is going to make a mess. Definitely not what I would use for this job.

I agree and have a 220v gas for the job, just read that someone had used a fluxcore with sucess.

 

You could always TIG weld it if you know someone that has the set up and know how.
That would be the best looking and strongests weld you could do!!

 

would definitely TIG, or MIG. NEVER flux. it concerns me on a diff. VERY cool idea though. never thought of that.

interesting thought tc. Are you speaking from experience? Also, before I go welding anything, is the front diff the same for auto and manual trans trucks? The one that I have out is from an auto but I thought they must be the same.
