My rear window motor has met its end (at least I THINK that's the problem..). Is that something that I can swap out with a new/reconditioned one, or is that a repair shop-type of job?

I'm not a gear-head but I tinker (done suspension work, stereo, and general maintenance but that's it). Is this feasible?

(symptoms: little/no noise when I push the button and the window won't stay closed - slides down on its own as I'm driving.)

Open it up and have a look. See if you can find out what is wrong. Then based upon that assessment, decide if it can be repaired.

Yeah, I'm gonna take a look, I just wanted to know if anyone's replaced the motor and how hard it was..

when you look take off the motor so you can inspect both the motor teeth and the regulator teeth that mesh with the motor teeth. the motor disconectes by removing 3 8mm bolts behind it. this can be done with the window up and using the smallest socket wrench. it is probably going down due to stripped teeth, as was the case with mine. I ended up changin both the regulator and motor that i got from a YT member and a scrap yard. best bet is to buy a used one from a scrap yard. changing the motor and regulator is pretty easy if you are good at tinkering. do a search and you will find writeups on this common problem.

it is VERY COSTLY to have the dealer do it; go with the DIY method if you can!

New motors can be quite expensive. I have found that obtaining one from a bone yard can be more cost effective. Frequently the front doors (dvr/passenger) are interchangeable. Get a used pass. door motor that will have far less wear. I did this on a GM truck that I have 9 years ago and it is still working fine today.

I bought my 4Runner (1991) with a broken rear window motor, so I replaced the motor. Then the next night someone broke into my truck through the rear window...so I had to buy a new window too. I ended up finding a rear window and motor for $250 and put them in in about an hour or so with no real problems. The window Ive got in now fits better than the one that came with my truck...so Im happy.
