I'm in the process of adding an auxiliary tank to my 92 Hilux Surf. There is plenty of room between the rear axle and bumper with the rear tire carrier. Does anyone know if it is "ok" to remove some or all of the cross member where the spare tire would attach to? Or move it, or replace it with something more flush to the bed.



With the cross member gone I could get the tank up another 4-5 inches.

 

You can remove the spare tire carrier, it should just unbolt, and won`t hurt anything.

 

i did the same thing with a spare tank, and cut out some of the crossmember, i haven't had a problem and its been up almost a year.

 

somebody needs to make a tank that is specificly fit for 2nd gen 4runners and doesn't hang down below the frame...

 

Hmm, never thought about the cherokee one, but I know several people have used the 14 gallong mustang ones in that location with good luck, even using the Stangs fuel pumps

 

i was thinkin about doing this... is there a build up thread I could reference. My questions pertain more to when do they use that tank... do they pump it to the primary tank as the primary tank is used, or is there a 2nd line... i'm very interested in this

 

Hey, I think that'd make a sweat behind the cab tank for a flatbed too...


Where's the neck? And can you turn it and it fit up higher between the rails more?

 

I would use a "T" fitting for the gas line and a switch so I could manually select the tanks--JMO...

too bad you can't fix the tank where it'll flow into the other one, and use a low pressure positive air pressure line to blow air into the aux tank's vent, and push the fuel into the primary...

Or, a fuel pump setup like a lawn mower has. It's a tiny disk, sorry diaphragm, that flutters with vacuum and pumps fuel.

The cherokee has an internal pump so you could easily plumb it to fill your existing tank or buy a fuel selector switch such as this. http://pollak.thomasnet.com/viewitem...-driven-valve?
The filler neck is at the back drivers side. The tank has a slight taper at the back for a better departure angle but I'm probably going to turn it around so that the filler neck is on my drivers side (RHD).
