The fill plug on the rear end of my 86 4Runner was pretty much stripped when I got it a month ago. I've tried with vise grips and a pipe wrench and it's still not budging. So aside from being stripped, it's apparently in there pretty tight. Any suggestions?

 

Not sure if there's enough room but I've seen maintenance guy's weld a good sized bolt to stripped ones and back them out. Have to be a good welder though.

 

Yah I wondered about that. Wasn't sure about maybe it getting too hot inside.

 

Also, where's a good place to get a new plug? Regular parts store carry something like that?

 

Welding on a large nut is probably the best idea but I've also had success using a combination of heat and shock. Heat up the plug with a small torch and use a hammer and drift on it. You could also try grinding a couple flat sides on the plug and get a big wrench on there. I also have a set of extracting sockets. They're cut in a sharp reverse spiral and actually cut into and pull down on the nut being removed. You don't always need them but when you do they make the most aggravating job so much easier.

Yah, an easy out. That's kinda my last resort. I'm thinking I'll try welding a nut on first.

 

I get my new plugs at the dealer .

I always replace them when getting a new to me Toyota or changing the fluids on a friends.

Not sure how skilled you are with a Air Hammer I have taken a few out that way. you may need to custom grind a chisel to work better. Although some people tends to cause more harm.

Once it breaks loose it should come right out.

 

So this is a fairly common problem? I hope it's just from the 4wd rigs getting the bolts beat up.

 

Not really it is from people using the wrong size and poor quality sockets.

Then places like the local quicky lube!!

Then from being in there and not removed since the vehicle was built.

Unless your really into your vehicle and doing the service work seeing it gets done if you don`t do it.

Some never do more then put gas in.

I am DEFINITELY one of those guys. Until it has problems.

Then you call it a POS and sell it for something in better shape right?
