Just because yours is causing problems does not mean it's a design deficiency or something of the like.

Given you replaced the head gasket and still have a compression problem, I may be more inclined to blame you for not fixing a problem (that could've been fixed when the engine was apart) than I would be to blame someone for blowing the gasket up in the first place.

*edit- sorry if I come across all agro and emo. It's just harder to fix a problem when something else is wrong.
Yeah, I get what your saying. I'd be scared to do that to an American truck...lol

Yeah, I can't blame the P.O. for the problem that I'm having. Ultimately it is my fault for buying it

The design is just fine...I was just a little upset at the moment and i'm fine now.

I think as soon as I get a job I need to tear into it. And fix the rings...or it could be the head.

Didn't you want me to do a test on it? A different compression test (can't remember the name) but maybe that will help find the problem...cuz I really don't trust the people who did my head job

So, whats that test? Is it pretty easy? Can you explain it to me? Thanks

leak down test

a fitting is put into the spark plug hole and teh cylinder is pumped up with compressed air. leaks give themselves away VERY quickly.

Can I get the fitting at an auto-parts store?

Valves closed
Piston at top dead center
Noise from intake = leaky intake valve
Noise from exhaust = leaky exhaust valve
Noise from crank case (where you put oil in to?) = Piston rings leaking

Is that correct?

And, you do HIGHLY recommend this right?

Thanks

as a diagnostic tool, yes, I recommend it.
as for the rest...
valves closed- yes
piston at tdc- NO
Piston should be at BOTTOM DEAD CENTER- which gives away cylinder taper / wear quite quickly
after that, yeah. to a certain extent noise comes from where the leak is.
BUT you also have to look for bubbles in the cooling system, and there actually is a certain amount of leakage that is expected around the cylinder / rings.

you get one at a GOOD repair facility.
if you call them on the phone and ask about it, and they connect you more than one person, they don't know.

Alright, I'll check around today and see what I can find. Summit will probably have one.

It would be soo cool if it was the head

I would probably just buy a performance head

and I suppose I should correct myself here. the leakdown guide I mentioned above says to have the piston at TDC. so... I suppose they're right. I disagree but oh well. but then again, with some cam's it's possible for the exhaust valve to start opening near BDC.

Oh, thanks!

I figured the two gauge one was for pressure from the tank and the other was for pressure inside the chamber.

If you had to guess...would you say its the valves or the rings?

Post some pics of your truck! (the '91) I have been thinking of doing a prerunner type thing with it.

Downey seems like a very good site for our 2wd trucks! I've found torsion bars for $100 on CG that were never used made by downey, d@mn I missed the deal

I've only got two pics at the moment

within the next few months ...
it's getting the rear end done spring-over-axle. that should net about another 2.5" lift in the back
and BJ spacers up front and lift spindles

in case you're wondering, there's no body lift on the truck- no one makes one for my particular setup

Why does it sit so high? What size of tires? Are those 15" wheels?

Never seen a 2wd sit that high before. They always seem to be a low-rider like mine.

Anyway, that kind of sucks yours is an Auto...unless you like it.

But I'm considering getting a 3" lift from downey and making it into a prerunner type truck. With "hopefully" 31" BFG ATs and a locker in the rear.

Thats pretty much my dream. It would be soo sweet.

It has a 2.5" Fabtech "Performance" lift kit (it's "discontinued" now). came with new upper arms and torsion bars in the front with add-a-leafs in the back (plus new shocks, but those don't affect the lift much)
It also has 2" lift shackles- the truck used to have a leer shell on it and it sagged the leaf springs so I added the shackles to compensate a bit and push the rear higher than the front.
The tires are 235/75-R15's (if I remember correctly) on el cheepo keystone steel wheels.

Oh sweet. Thats pretty cool. I guess I could have looked in your sig and I would have known

Anyway, what are you going to do with it? Is there a reason you want to lift it?
