So I have a 91 extra cad sr5 4x4 with a 93 22re. I use it as a daily driver but I wouldn't mind a little bit of extra power. What's the best and most effective way to gain a little horsepower while not loseing gas mileage? A cool air intake? Or something along those lines?

 

Nothing is really worth it, unless you want to do a motor swap.....

 

Just regular tune-ups and normal maintenance, some guys here like a little cam, maybe a better head. And your truck comes stock with a cold air intake. Sucks outside air around the headlight. A "cold" air intake sucks hot under hood air, it just has a bigger element, so less resistance. Just love it the way it is, reliable.

Often times, the best way to get better MPGs is to change your driving habits. Less skinny pedal, more MPGs.

270/430 cam from engnbldr likes when you rev the truck hard.. I wouldn't say anything that was done to my motor has made it roast the tires.. it just has more power through the rpm range and I don't need to down shift anymore..

engnbldr head, cam, larger valves, lce header, egr block off plates, cone filter in the engine bay, 10.0:1 compression ratio, 2.25" exhaust with no resonator/cat/etc..

I wouldn't recommend anyone build a 22re ... just go 3rz swap with some mild bolt ons and call it a day. Before everything I got 22mpg pretty reliably, now I'm at 19 or so.. Leave the 22re alone and enjoy it not giving you grief.

 

my first question is what tire size and gears you have.

if thats the case hes running the proper tire/gear combo. id start with a full tune up and full exhaust setup. my .02 cents

 

5th gear is a waste until 65 mph, if you can do that? Maybe 235's?
My 88 has 31's and kicks OK but my 94...there is no way. Both are 22re's 4X4's.

You could change to a really slick synthetic engine oil, adjust the valves to spec. Change the trans fluids to a modern synthetic as well, and change all the filters. change to a larger ignition coil & do a full tune up.
After that it starts to get expensive, headers, overbore TB, CD Ignition, camshaft, chain & guides, head work (LCE ? 22RE Performance).
