I have an 87 4wd pickup with a 22r that is more or less bone stock. The muffler is almost completely rusted out and is now brittle w/ holes. I am in the market for a new exhaust setup and after doing research on this forum and multiple places, this is the setup that i have decided on.

going to keep stock headers. (i know i know =[ i dont have the money as of yet)
2.25 in/out magnaflow cat
2.25 pipe to a flowmaster super 40 series muffler
2.25 pipe that exits where it does stock but w/ some sort of muffler tip.

Any suggestions or thoughts on how to improve this ideal setup? or anyone with a similar setup?

yeah. Well it's definately a top notch setup. Betcha it's going to sound sweet.

 

i should be ordering the cat and the muffler this weekend and then having a muffler shop install it all. my goal is for it to sound as rice-free as possible. haha

 

should sound pretty good, on my 22r's i had a headman header, then 2.25 to a dynomax super turbo, then 90 degree out. sounded great and the whole setup cost me about 70 bucks. plus some efi parts traded for the header

 

Toyotas dont have headers...they have exhaust manifolds....

The only problem I can see with this setup is that the manifolds are not as free flowing (big) as the rest of the system so it is constricted. Pretty much a waste without headers IMO...



BTW, check out ebay for NEW individual components...I got mine for very very cheap and just took them to a reputable exhaust shop. Saved a lot of $$$$

 

True True. but for the time being until i save up for headers, how do you think the setup i have stated will sound?

 

About like an 2150 VW into dual turbo mufflers, but not quite as loud. Almost 'ricey' but without the high pitched rattle.

 

Should sound tits....just save up for the headers and do it all at once

Should I go look at my engine now cause the way you guys are talking about putting headers on a 22R makes me wonder If I have more then four exhaust ports? ITS F#$%ING PLURAL! LEARN IT! Oh and I wouldn't get a flowmaster, look on summitracing at thrush's 30$ chambered muffler, my cousin runs them, sounds EXACTLY the same, not to mention you can get a high flow cat from there cheaper too. Also don't bother getting an exhaust until you get a headeR or it will be a waste of someones time, and your money, but hey do whatcha like. Except listen to deathcore, because deathcore sucks.

magnaflows on my 22re and 3.0 sounded great especially at mid to high rpm. flowmasters at low rpm sound great but fade when u get into higher rpm

dynomax i heard sound like magnaflows

all great mufflers depending on what you like to hear.

 

im thinkin bout getting me a magnaflow cat on my flowmaster 40 setup. mines sounds like a tin can on my 22r 4runner without the cat. make sure u hav a solid setup bfor u jump rite on it. i know from experience with that tin can noise hahaa
