Engine Troubles 22RE
#23
Right now i am trying not to totally go nuts... i have been looknig at what it needs, and for some reason i am all of a sudden needing a new 261 cam and a heavy flywheel for the truck. I have to step away from the internet catalogs

Nice. I'm planning on just dropping in a replacement engine with somewhat low mileage. I was planning on selling this truck at the end of summer anyway because we are expecting our first kid in September and my wife needs a new baby hauler so the Yota has to go. In a couple years when my car is paid off I am hoping to get a 2004+ Tacoma with a back seat.

Don't get so nutty on the rod knock. It sounds to me like the timing tensioners are gone and you have about two revs before they break thru into the water galleys. These damn 22re's are hard to figure out sometimes. Othertimes they're easy. Google it man. You'd be suprised about how much crap you'll learn.

dan did you ever find out the problem with your truck? my sons truck is making the same sound. he said it got hot last night and thats when the noise started. I thought the video was of his truck, it is even red. he has a heavy right foot, he will learn the hard way.

I beleive it is the main bearings gone out. I didnt pull the motor out yet. I just broguht a second block i had to the machine shop so i can rebuild it. I will have it apart in about 3 weeks to find out what it was. But I found more small chunks on my dipstick when i checked again last weekend for something. No that large, but little chunks big enoguh to know it is not normal wear and tear

I also am having an issue with some knocking...and thinking it might be a rod or main bearing just makes me sick.
Can I just ask if the knock was there as soon as you start it up or did it have to warm up first?

It was at start up. I thoguht at first it was timing chain but i changed that and it kept on. Probably could have lived with it for a while, but that last long trip at higher RPMs just killed it. Better now than at an even worse time. So i will rebuild it and have a truck to not worry about the engine.

This may be a redundant question, but do you happen to have a mechanical oil pressure gauge lying around that you could hook to the motor and check the pressure while it's running? I had an old Cherokee that yes, had a low oil pressure light, but did not come on when my oil pump shot out. Same symptoms; metal flakes in the oil, all the knocking, etc (not sure how I grenaded the pump like I did, but sure happened). If it's possible, I'd surely check that before pull'n the motor... just food for thought.
