Engine swap advice

I'm about to invest money into an engine swap and would like some advice. I have an 88 Toyota pickup with the standard 22REC but it's already been rebuilt a couple times. I need a reliable vehicle and cannot afford to buy anything new off the lot.

I would like to swap a more powerful engine into the truck but I don't know what kind is best or what would fit. I want to get away from the 4 cylinder. Even though they are simple to work on, I would like more power.

Is it possible to fit a V6 engine into the truck without heavy modifying?
I don't have a garage to do the work so I have to take it to a shop and I don't want to be paying more than I have to.

Welcome to YT

It won't be cost effective to pay a shop to do an engine conversion IMHO. You'd be better off selling your truck and buying a Taco with the engine you want already in it. Now if you could do it all yourself its worth considering.

These threads will give you an idea of what's involved to go from a 22re to 3.4 V6:

You can find a wrecked truck or 4runner, of similar year, and put in a Toyota 3.0 V6. Keep looking for a rear ended total. Buy the whole vehicle and do the swap. FYI, Toyota did a wiring change between 86 and 87. I'm sure I'll get flamed for suggesting this but it avoids custom crap and time to do so. Even the popular chevy v6 swaps still require custom crap that when it breaks, you will not be able to go to a parts store and get what you need to fix it quickly. I would have the v6 gone through by a machine shop and have it refreshed or overhauled. A free flow cat and 2 1/4 exhaust with magnaflow type muffler will be sweet and perform respectably with your lower ratio 4 banger gearing.

My $0.02

If you are going to go to the trouble of installing a 3.0 V6, you should just install a 3.4 V6.

Both swaps would require exactley the same amount of vehicle modification. New tranny, engine mounts, wiring, etc... but you would be so much better off with the 3.4 .

Mind you, as Mt' Goat said... if you don't have the place or the ability to do a majority of the work yourself, then getting a newer Toyota with the motor you want is a much better way to go.

Yeah, I really hate not having my own garage where I would do the majority of the work myself. However, I do have a garage that is two hours away. Looks like I need to start hitting the junk yards

i wouldnt reccomend putting a 3.0 back in. the toy 3.4 from 95+ trucks & 4runners is a common swap. the chevy 4.3 v6, lexus 4.0 v8, ford 302 and chevy 350 are all common swaps

theres hours of reading on engine swaps among the toyota boards.
after 2 months of exhausting searching, most of your inquiries will be satisfied. here on yt (great boards btw) there are several threads worth reading/browsing. but also check marlin boards, trailgears boards and pirate too. litterally dozens of hours of reading on the subject, and all sorts of swapps too!! vw engines, frods, chevwaz, later yota blocks.....just about the only swap i havent seen and dpnt want to....dare i utter..... a NuISSANnce engine into a toyota...

A Toyota 2LT diesel will bolt right up to the motor mounts and you can use the 4cyl tranny. Its a 2.4L TD. It has about the same power and torque as the 22R but burns quite a fair amount less fuel. You can also turn the boost up a bit and intercool it to get more steam out of it. Just another route. And it would be a pretty much bolt in affair. You may be able to find one for not too much money either. It wont be cheap but wont be anything like the diesel I did. And would be much easier.
