engine rebuilding tips?
I was wondering if you guys could give me some good tips on putting the little 22re back together, you know like special things to look for and check before i put it back into the truck. I have it sitting on the engine sitting on a stand minus the timing cover, oil pan, and head. I am getting both gasket kits tom. from carquest for only 99 bucks. It is supposed to include all the goodies. there is just those little things you dont see people mention very often like the arrows on the oil pump gears, things like that. Your opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Beware of a shop called Dead On Arrival and the owner Tim Jenkins. Their name describes what your experience will be and Tim's about the most unscrupulous person I've ever had the missfortune of dealing with.
Try LC Engineering, they have a good reputation on the 4 banger.

check that you have the oil pump bolts in the right spot. The shortest one goes right under the timing marks. If not your chain tensioner may not work. I would also only asseble just to the first section of intake. Leave the throttlebody part of the intake off. It makes it easier to run the FI stuff with it off. Make sure you put a little bit of goop right at the top of the chain cover where it meets the head gasket at the corners.

I dont think I would want carquest gaskets on my motor, but thats just me... if you havnt bought them yet look at www.engnbldr.com Be sure your using a new timing chain, i reccommend metal guides from the same site.
other than that its a pretty simple engine...

Carquest may use felpro - or any other reliable gasket maker.. What is the brand of the gaskets they sent you?
Ted (engnbldr) uses rock gasekets. Felpro has a "mixed" reputation in regard to the head gasket in particular. They've worked for me in the past.
I don't know what your budget is, but I'd recommend that for another $100 or so, you go with Ted's .5mm over stainless valve set. He also sells new freeze plugs and just about everything you might need. For a full rebuild - consider his "master" kit - it includes pistons, a metal backed timing chain guide, etc.
Advice:
1) Pack your oil pump upon reassembly. This is important.
2) If you cut your head or deck your block, pay attention to the size of the dowels in the head.
3) Pay attention to the order of which you torque down the head bolts. Oh yea, you need new ones.
4) See if there is any wear on the front and rear seal areas of the crank - if so use a sleeve over them.
5) Replace your clutch pilot bearing.

Good info to know since most master rebuild kits dont include them.

i have read numerous threads from the more experienced mechanics on this forum as well as ted(engnbldr) that have stated that the 22re head bolts do not have to be replaced.

I've always been taught that replacing the head bolts on a worn OHC motor was a Very Good Idea [TM]. I can provide references to others than think this is the way to go on a 22r-22re. Honestly, I've never had a failure due to one of these bolts - but I typically replace with ARP hardware and forget about it after that.
Ted certainly has built many more motors that me... But then again, he also sells these bolts - something he wouldn't do if there wasn't a market for them.
Guess you can make your own decision!

I don't know what ted sells them for but Toyota wanted $8 a piece, I got a whole set from LC engineering for less than $30. Cheap insurance in my opinion. Also is this a stock rebuild what parts are you using? I just finished mine not quite 500 miles on it so my mind is still fresh.
