engine rattle

I'm looking into buying a 93 truck with a 22re that has about 150k miles. they are selling it for cheap but the engine has a loud rattle noise comeing from the top of the engine all the time they had the valves adjusted at a local shop and didnt help with the noise. looks like the front cover was removed not to long ago and the shop that adjusted the valves said it looks like someone just put a timing chain in it.

the truck is on a friends car lot just got it from auction

timing chain tensioner could be shot. if it's overtightened or something gets in it, it will stop working. i had this problem and it started about 6 months after i installed a new one. i think it was engine sludge -- i just said F it and tore the whole engine apart...

Cool

Mine makes that same sound, since I bought it, and I have put about 10k miles on it. The only thing that gets me is that you said that it has no power, maybe you are just used to something with a bigger engine, these toyota pickups arent racecars in any way, shape, or form. You may have a rod knock or something, which is serious, if its a rod knock, then you are going to have to rebuild it anyways, so just drive it around, if it gets worse have it checked out by a mechanic. It is hard to diagnose sounds on a computer
