I just picked up a '92 4x4 pickup. 5sp 22re. She needs work; over the past few days I've been putting on new brakes and suspension.
The engine runs fine and idles great. Driving is smooth, no hesitation or hiccups. Except the engine just plain dies sometimes. When shifting (most of the time from 3rd up to 4th, but occasionally in other gears) and under very hard braking or climbing inclines it just cuts out, then I've got to wait a minute before she will fire up again.
I'm hoping it's the fuel filter, which I am going to swap asap. Has anyone experienced this before? Anything else I should look at?

 

A new fuel filter would definitely be the first thing I would try.

 

make sure your dashpot isn't sticking also

 

Well I don't no if this will help you or not, but years back, I bought a toyota picup, and every timr I put my foot on the clutch, the rig would stall. after days of trying to find out what it was, I found a small wire running through my clutch boot that was grounding out everytime I stepped on the clutch. you might want to check int that. It is a long shot, but you never no.

 

Uh oh! I replaced the fuel filter and........no luck!

keithguts, I don't see and random wires in the clutch boot.

I've also noticed some other weirdness. The trucks holds a steady idle. I slowly rev it up, but once it hits 1750rpm it bounces back down to 1500, revs up to 1750 then bounces back down to 1500, and again and again...... My foot is steady on the pedal while it jumps around. I can punch the pedal and get it past 1750 no problem and it idles steady. Then I slowly release the pedal and once the revs get down to 2250 it drops down to 1500 and bounces back and forth between 1500 and 1750 again. What the heck is going on??

Also, when I rev the engine the shifter and 4x stick move side to side. Is that normal???

On the bright side the hub repack/rotor swap went very smooth!

A little more info....
When I first fire up the engine and slowly rev it up, the same thing happens but at a higher rpm. It bounces between 2250-2500 when cold, then slowly idles down, bouncing up and down by 250rmps the whole time till it's finally warm and bounces between 1500-1750. I keep a constant pressure on the pedal the whole time as the engine warms up. Seems like something is cutting the engine (fuel?) then it 'catches' after it drops 250rpm.

Have you checked all your vacuum lines? You might have a hole in one. Also, check all the common stuff-plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button. They may be damaged or need to be replaced.

This is a longshot, but you might want to check your throttle position sensor (TPS) and see if it is broken. My 84 Camry was giving me problems like you have once. My mechanic found the problem. My TPS has a little plastic cover over it. He took it apart and glued the broken plastic piece back together with epoxy and fixed the problem.

 

I put new wires and plugs in (not because of this problem). I will check the cap and rotor. I checked all the vacuum lines best I could.
I am also leaning towards the TPS, just need to do a little more research before I tackle that (I'm a noob mechanic).

If the TPS is original, it's probably toast. The internal springs get weak over time which changes the position of the wipers. Even after adjusting them, they won’t hold the adjustment very long or won’t adjust properly at all.

 

Yeah sounds like TPS I had a bunch of like troubles. I was just jigguling wires and listening when I tapped on TPS with the handle of a screw driver it started idling good and not missing replaced it now it runs like a champ
