Engine chugs and dies

Engine chugs and dies
I'm needing some help with this infernal machine of mine.
1990 4Runner with a rebuilt 3VZE in it. When I set up the timing belt, I was nervous about doing it wrong, so I rolled the engine over many, many times to make sure the marks lined up, so I'm *reasonably* sure that's not a problem. I set the timing mark on the balancer to 0 and set the rotor on the distributor to point at the 11:00 position and it starts but it just goes CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA then peters out and dies.
I can start it from a click sometimes, and other times it has to crank a bit. I tried rotating the distributor 180 degrees, but that made things worse and backfired through the intake.
While I am reasonably sure I set up the cams right, I am not a professional and it's been 20 years since my last engine rebuild, and that was a Chevy and I remember it being easy. I'm also thinking it could be a fuel delivery problem and if it is, can I just purge the system? Can I do that from one place, or do I have to do it in a few places? The vehicle sat for two years while I worked on it a little at a time, but I was careful to cover fuel lines and things like that.
I'll go record it tomorrow when it's daylight if that helps at all.

You need a timing light. Setting the timing by pointing the rotor to 11 o'clock could easily be far enough off to cause your problems.
The tool you need (and you'll need again) will set you back about $20.
