Emissions Question
Hi to all..... hope everyone has a great new year. Ive got a 94 4Runner, 3.0, M/T, with 297,356 miles. I bought it from a friend who was the 1st owner. He is a forester, so many of these miles are off road. I live in Atlanta, and the emissions are kicking my *ss. Values are through the roof and Knoxx's are 4500. Should I try cleaning the ports below the EGR, replace the Cat. or should I pay someone to fudge it for $100.00 . I need to get a tag and am "Borrowing" the tag from my Z-Car( 77 280Z )
Already done plugs, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter O.E. wires, and after that.... the values still rose. I love my 4Runner..( got it for 1500.00 )
If I can get 30K out of this motor...Ill be satisfied.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi midiwall.. all the values are high. HC...CO....NOx ppm..... This truck has always lived in the country where emissions tests are not required. This is exactly what I was afraid of when I bought it.... but the price was just too good. I think you are right about the cat.... I may start there. I know someone at Meineke and can get a cat installed for 180.00. I think youve got the right idea. Thanks Dude
www.stoogebrothers.com ( Im Joe )
HC ppm 230 (Fail )
CO% 0.78 (Passed)
NOx ppm 4195 ( Fail )
CO + CO2% 15.0 O.K.

$180's pretty high... hit up eBay for a Magnaflow HighFlow (link) for $56 shipped and then you're looking at only about 30 minutes labor. Make sure you buy the right size - I think your exhaust (if it's stock) is 2".
(cool band dude!)

Thanks midiwall... I appreciate the tip. Everything on this rig is stock. No mods that Im aware of....although he ordered it without running boards... thank goodness. I just did the Idler arm.... what a difference. It should be alot better on the trail this weekend on the way to the Huntin' camp. Take care and Happy New Year to all...............

Yeah, if the cat is even remotely working, you should have no problem passing with a fuel injected engine. (Really, you should have no problem passing without it, but there's a chance). It sounds like it is running rich, and possibly the cat is not getting hot enough to light off.
How much does it cost for a retest? I might try the normal maintenance stuff first - Plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, cap, air and fuel filters. (Wouldn't be a bad idea to replace these on a "new to you" vehicle regardless)
Other things that may help (keywords for a search) - TPS, Seafoam, AFM

After the complete tuneup and cat, you might even try old tricks like heavy oil (striaght 40w) and Marvel Mystery Oil additive, and hotter plugs, and premium fuel. Then go back to 'normal' after it passes.
An no, a new cat won't clean up all the emissions from an old really worn engine, but it's sure gotta help.
Get a compressor and a couple of big tanks. Fill up a tankful of exhaust from a clean running engine. Route your exhaust into the empty tank, pipe the "good emmisions" tank down to your exhaust....
