Efi tripping out

Have a 1992 4Runner and was coming out of the mountains and started to smell like something was burning and then the 4Runner just completely died, blew the efi fuse so I put a new one in to try and just get me home and did that a few times. Had my last fuse which was a 25 amp when it calls for a 15, was driving fine for a bit and then blew and put another fuse in it and it won’t start at all. Any solutions or things to check would be greatly appreciated

it sounds like there was a short in the wiring somewhere, and the bigger fuse allowed the wire to get hotter and burn thru even worse than it did with the 15amp fuse.

if you can localize the burning smell, for instance with the engine off can you still smell it by any fuse box, over by the ecu, etc.

fwiw, on the early 22re engines there is a fusible wire link under the hood, that is designed to slowly burn up, not sure that it's relevant to the efi fuse blowing, but you could try looking at that, it's also located at a fuse box... there have been cases where it rubbed against metal enough to short out.

it might be a good idea to look at the wiring diagram in the fsm, and physically follow the wire going from the efi fuse back to it's location, looking for damage, then follow it from there.

search for other threads on this, for instance: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f131...lowing-223142/

Agreed. I'd start going after wiring and connections. Any place where someone may have altered something is an excellent place to start. It was pretty rare for the factory loom to have issues unless someone messed with it.

Take a look at the O2 sensor. If the sensor wire shorts to ground (the tailpipe), that blows the EFI fuse.

My son's 91 kept blowing the EFI fuse and it was the wire to the O2 sensor swinging and touching the exhaust pipe. It finally melted through. He changed the fuse a few times and it would run fine for a while. It would swing over again and touch the pipe and blow the fuse.

Agree with all of the above, if it was a hard short fuse would instantly blow, that tells
me it’s the swingy wire touching or a wire that is rubbing with vibration. Do comeback and tell us what it was!!!!
