ECU compatability
I have a 1994 Pickup 4X4 with a 22RE and a cooked computer. The part no. is 89661-3D070. What others would be compatible on this model?
Any help in locating another computer would be greatly appreciated.

Have a service manual? It should list the ECUs and pin outs there.. I believe there are 3-4 for that particular truck: auto/manual and 4wd vs 2wd (off the top of my heaD)

I'd bet you can use any ECU from 1989 to 1995 truck. You didnt mention tranny, the ECU's for that are also included the tranny ECU. And here is the kicker, if you have a manual, you should be able to use an ECU with an auto. But not the other way around. I've seen it done! Sure, it will have tranny codes for open solenoid circuits, but you dotn have an OD off light, so you'll never know it! Oh, you will have to get a 4WD one. The ECU's will usually give you the tranny, ie ATM and the engine, ie 3VZFE or 22RE etc

You can't use any ECU from that date range... You might be able to do an auto ECU in a manual truck, haven't tried it.. another good graphic that gives you an idea of where to start:

Like I said, there were several different ECUs in the 1993 manual. Main differences were 2wd vs 4wd and auto vs manual.

I have mine out right now. I can look at the model number tonight. I'm not sure what year my engine is because it was swapped in by the previous owner who prefers the 22RE over 3.0, but I have a 5-speed and 4wd.

Sure you can. I know from first hand expereince. I did mention it must be the same engine, ie 22RE and it must be for 4WD. And if he has a manual tranny, he can even use an ECU for an auto tranny. I've seen that also firs thand.

Rob, is this from an 88? I ask because an 88 ECU wont work (looking at your signature file). They use a resistor for the injector circuit. While from 89 onward, the injectors themselve went way up in resistance and no longer use the resistor. This is the aluminum heat sink looking item mounted on the pass side inner fender. Usually has 2 or sometimes 3 wires going to it.

After much searching I have found that not all ECU's from 22re ,M/T 4x4(89-95) will work. The key to this is matching the pin no.s on the actual ECU. They will read something similar to 26P 16P 12P or other variations. If these numbers do not match then you cannot plug in the ECU. Check out previous post and you will see a different configuration for the pins which corresponds to the wiring harness.

As tech mentioned above, it's not just being able to connect it.. You need to consider 2wd/4wd and you can only use an auto ECU if you've got an auto.
The 85-88 22RTE and 22RE ECUs look the same, they'll both plug in.. They're very different. Just one example.

dcg9381: kinda on topic: do you know if the MS harness you made will plug into both manual and auto ECUs? I've got an auto ECU and harness, but swapped in a Manual tranny(no issues to this point). I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be an issue, but I figured I'd ask.

The harnesses I make are determined by application - that is I can do them for any VAST equipped 22RE truck. I don't support automatic transmissions however... As long as you can get me a core ECU or connector (I think the connector alone is like $50) I can build the harness.
I'm totally swaped with harness requests right now, the only thing I've got fully assembled is for an 85-88...
If I'm too slow.. and I often am, as I work too much (like right now) - I can walk you through building one yourself... You need to be able to solder, that's about it.

I'm wondering if those who make up harnesses or adapt have some relative pinout diagrams for these different ECU options. check engine light aside (which these units are mostly past emissions inspection anyway these days) I would think it would be possible to get some reasonable operation with cross fitting if comparable pin outs are known. It is starting to get a little expensive and more difficult to get just the one you are looking for. For instance there are many references to the notion that you can put an ECU from an automatic into a standard but not viceversa. meanwhile most folks seem to say 4WD has to have compatible ECU, but if you've got manual hubs, I don't know if you get slightly different power curves when you are in 4WD or maybe the RPMs related to ground speed is different but i'm not really sure what difference that makes in get halfway decent operation out of an ECU.
I'm also wondering if it's possible to monitor the dwell on the injectors? it seems the output of this whole scenario is longer and shorter opening time for injectors. But i've never really seen any way to check that.
It also seems that some aspects are superfluous. I've got a 1988 4WD that has no oxygen sensor. It probably was hacked out a long the way, over the course of several different engines, but it runs just fine . . . and while this is obviously an EFI harness, maybe the truck was originally carbureted because it has no check engine light on the dash. I had stuck airflow sensor and the resulting rich running and stumbling got me going over the injection components which I had never bothered to do when it was running right enough, so now i'm just trying to gather up documentation and knowledge in prepping for any future issues.
