Automatic ECU into Manual
I have a '91 4runner v6 with a manual tranmission. The ECU appears to be fried. Can I use the ECU from an automatic in the vehicle or are they totally different. I understand the manual ECU will not work in an Auto equipped rig, but will an Auto ECU work in a manual rig?
Thanks.

Your wire harness will not plug into the Auto ECU as stated. The auto ECU has like ten connector that connect to the auto tranny so if you can figure out the wire then you need to do some cut and splicing then it would work...

All you have to do is save up some wire, like for your back-up light, clutch pedal, 4x4, start-up, and all the rest you can cut it off from the main harness then black tape over it. It should work w/o interference from the transmission.

I believe you might have to connect a few wires together so the auto ecu believes the transmission is in neutral/park so you can start the truck. I may be wrong but I know you need to do that when you swap a manual tranny into an auto truck.

fooling the auto ECU
I did this a year ago. It's pretty easy, the auto ECU just drives around happily thinking it's in neutral. I found all the info on Yotatech--just search. lots of people have done the auto to manual swap. All I remember is there are two big wires in the plug that have to be shorted together, I think they're white. Good luck
