Dual AC Condenser?

I never paid much attention to my AC condenser(s). Looking through various threads here and on Pirate it appears the 22re usually just has one large AC condenser in front of the radiator. But my 88 22re has an extra half-sized condenser in the top front of the main one. It looks just like this:

(credit to acicomp, since I stole this picture out of your thread)

Is this second half-condenser common for the 22re? I wondered if it was an add-on to help with lower AC efficiency when converting from R12 to R134a.

Anything you know about it, please share.

Thanks!

Never heard of that. Does it have two sets of refer lines? Could it be a tranny cooler or eng oil?

Not sure which lines those are. Definitely not a tranny or engine oil cooler.

There was an A/C option called "Supercool" which comprised of a second condenser 'core' ahead of the main large one. It added a few ounces of refrigerant capacity and extra condenser capacity to help cool the 4Runner's larger passenger area. It is an official Toyota part introduced before the HFC134a things came into effect.

My '87 runner was equipped with the condenser and 1/2 setup.
I removed the condenser when I opted for onboard air instead of AC.
Is this a seldom seen option?? I still have the condenser.
