Drive Shaft hits gas tank ..
ok so my rear driveshafts rear u joint hits my gas tank when in really tuff spots .. is this normal ? what should i look for?.. i do know my gas tanks not loose or any thing like that .
i havent looked at the tranny mount yet .. just saw where the tanks flange is wore down and the u joint is scratched up ..

The only reason I can think of is maybe if your rear spring bushings are so wore out that the whole rear end is allowed to sway from side to side.

so since ive never replaced them i guess thats a good place to start.
my truck also has a slight vibration now also .. its not constant and only at around 40mph and faster.. it vibrates for a few seconds maybe 5 -10 seconds then stops for about 2-5 seconds then vibrates 5-10 second and so on..
maybe the u joint i guess.
im gonna take the rear shaft out and drive the truck with the front one only see what happens.
and i guess its time to order some bushings..

That happened to me when I had leaves. It was due to the axle arcing when it flexes. Its not much, but the gas tank is close. It will still arc when really flexed, no matter what you do.
The bushings are a great first step. I'd replace both the fronts and the rears. Hopefully that will prevent it from hitting the tank, but I dunno. Mine still hit after i put in Downey springs with all new bushings and shackles.

Thanks . i did flex the heck out of the truck this weekend.
I'll go ahead and replace the bushings and just see what happens .they do look pretty worn.
i think im gonna raise the tank and its skid plate as much as possible also ..

pretty common problem in my world any guy I wheel with and gets twisted up had driveshaft rub on his gas tank skid....typicallly its the modified rigs with really flexxy springs...but you dont sound like your modified much....maybe your getting down and dirty with it more than others in a stocker..... mine rubbed with brand new 4" rear trail gear springs and shackles .....The fix for me I moved my gas tank

yea my suspension is nothing special.. since i dont have my spare tire under the truck any more .. i may look into putting a tank back where the spare was .. and removing the original one ..
i guesss this is pretty normal if your gonna wheel the truck a little on the hard side.

I've got flexy longer than stock trailgear springs in the rear and I mash the hell out of my tank. With the dents on it from the driveshaft I wouldn't be surprised if it holds half a gallon less now. Unless I feel like mounting it in the bed or across the frame where the spare normally sits, I just deal with it.

.. im really gonna look into putting a new tank at the rear ..and removing the oem one .
i will do that .. thanks .
