i just recently changed the clutch in the yoter, and when i put my crossmember back in 3 out of the 4 bolts were striped on the pass side, so im gonna drill and tap to 1/2" a wee bit bigger, ive allready got grade 8 hardware (i kno overkill) but my question is do you drill the hole to half inch?? or slightly smaller?

 

I would good slightly smaller so when you tap the holes your tap has a nice piece of metal to get good threads in it.

 

If you are tapping to 1/2x13, drill 27/64s. If 1/2x20 29/64s...regards......Rick

Just remember, the tap DOES NOT go in the drill- tapping doesn't work well at 3000rpm. A friend of a friend did this on his truck. He's not a thinker.

Go slow, turn it in a bit, back it out a bit. I use oil

When taping, I usually go maybe 1/8 of a turn at a time, then back off 1/4 turn then cut in another 1/8 and so forth all the while pressing the tap into the metal really hard. If you can't get it started, put a floor jack and block of wood under the tap and press it into the hole slightly to start it. I use some motor oil or what ever I have laying around, but you're probably supposed to use specific oil.

 

Why didn`t you just heli coil or the thread repair of your choice to the proper thread size of M12x1.25 . Or are you planning to change all the holes to 1/2" x13

 

just easier, i allready have a tap n die set, and couldent find the right bolt cuz all the threads were stripped, but yeah i used some chain lube (had it laying around) and it went really well, i saw some 1 els taping once and they did the in and out thing, so i did the same went well replaced 4 bolts 2 on each side, and they hold good, wasent realllly expecting it to work, cuz this typ of thing never works for me
