downsizing tire or adding a LSD

so yesterday we went out to the dunes
i have a 94 3.0 4runner 5spd....i did ISR mod and VaFm mod....
currently running on 31'' bridgestones....

so all my buddies have cherokees and i see most of them running 30'' tires...they say it helps them out on the sand sense they are lighter...

she was power to be out in the dunes but struggles going up long tall hills

also read up that you can swap a 3gen supra lsd into the 4runner...

wat would be a better option, lsd or downsizing on the tires?

30 vs 31" tires are not that big a difference in weight. Especially with tire prices not worth it.
Has power but struggles up hills? That's a contradiction.
LSD is no good if you can't turn your tires in the first place IMO.

LSD provides the opportunity for more traction. Smaller (assuming diameter wise) tires won't make a noticeable difference in traction. Smaller tires will make a difference in your final drive power output, but a 30 vs 31 inch tire is only 1/2 inch taller at hub, and the 'power' output difference will also be mostly un-noticeable.

Tire weight difference? That's silly, nothing else to say about that.

So, if you want more 'traction' an LSD may help, but I doubt it will be all that effective in the dunes. Automatic Locker is cheaper and WILL make some difference.

If you want more power..... yeah, not much to give, so the best thing to do is not want more power.

Go supra lsd you can upgrade it, search supra lsd rebuild kit.

Or get a lunchbox locker like an Aussie locker or a lockright

Search for info on the lockers on yt.

your buddies don't know what they're talking about, that's why they drive j**ps. You guys do air down when playing in sand right?

read up on the pros and cons of lockers and an lsd and buy whichever one you think is best for you.

Cherokee?

Unibody. Probably the whole vehicle is lighter than yours. Plus, 4.0L vs 3.0L.....

Watch the lockers on the slide slopes, LSD might be a better option.

a quick google search shows your 4r weighs roughly 4100 lbs and a Cherokee weighs roughly 3500 lbs. BEcause of that weight difference you will need a larger/wider tire in order for your 4r to have the same level of flotation.

What gearing you have?, 4.56 would be preferred.

yea,, i guess my issue is traction and figuring out what gearing i have....

looking at some vids from this weekend,,, it doesnt bog down, it just stops climbing...
i always are down to 10psi all around
can the e-lcoker from the 3gen be swapped into the 2nd gen??

i think that would help....

other then that the 4runner is perfect..... no over heating issues or crank sensors like cherokees

Check on 4x4wire.com for a good writeup on swapping in an e-locker from a 3rd gen. It's possible, but not trivial. I believe the only switchable locker available as a direct fit for the 2nd gen is the ARB.
