Different Steering Stabalizer mounts?

Hi guys,

I was about to replace the steering damper/stabalizer on my '93 4runner (22re) but ran into a hiccup.

One of the mounts on the new damper is different.. the one on there now has a joint that looks like a tie rod end joint where it can swivel around. (on a side note, what is that kind of joint called?). The one I'm about mount is just attached with a regular nut and bolt.

here's the replacement I got: Monroe SC2947 Magnum Steering Damper : Amazon.com : Automotive

Here's what the one looks like that's on there now (mount wise): Steering Damper Toyota 4Runner RN130 YN130 VZN130 4WD | eBay

This article seems to imply that it's ok: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ringStabilizer

What say you guys?

Thanks!

ball and socket joint.

The one I put on my truck looked like your replacement. It has worked just fine. I would say it is not really a "regular nut and bolt" since it is mounted through fairly thick rubber and has the taper on one side. That seems to allow enough give that the ball and socket joint is not necessary.

Yeah, good point on the rubber part, I hadn't noticed that before.

Thanks for the info!

Did you get yours installed? I was flabbergasted at the difference it made in the handling on my truck. My old one was pretty worn out, I suppose.

Yeah, I got in installed yesterday, but then I had some issues replacing an upper ball joint. the long story short is one of the top bolts sheared off when I was torquing it down, then I did something stupid with the replacement and now I need a replacement for my replacement. =)

I basically replaced the front suspension and steering system (pitman arm, TREs, ball joints and shocks), so i'm hoping to get a nice ride!

That happens sometimes. Let us know how it turns out in the end. I considered replacing all of my balljoints, bushings, tie rod ends, etc when I got my truck last year, but somehow that has never floated to the top of the priority list. Hopefully I'll get a chance this summer to bounce off enough rocks that those parts become a priority

First I'm putting in a lunchbox locker in the front and an LSD in the back. Should be good to go for awhile after those projects!

I finally got everything put back together and took her around the block for a test spin.. feels MUCH tighter and stable!

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait till tuesday to get the alignment done and new tires. Can't wait to get her on the freeway and see how she does there!
