Dies after 5 seconds.... Ideas??

Hey alls...

Here is a little background info...

I bought this 86' xtracab pickupw / 22re a little over a month ago... the previous owner had it for a little while and couldnt keep it. The truck had a severe misfire and the po said that he had replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor and the problem didnt change... he also said they ran a comp. test on it and all four where hovering around 150psi (140k miles on it)

I brought home a spark tester from work and checked all 4 cylinders... and they would all jump the gap on the tester... then I started pulling plug wires while it was running... number 1 made no difference... so I pulled the spark plug and it was bone dry... so I assumed that the injector was dead.

Then I realized that it had spun a rod bearing... oil pan was full of fuel. Pulled the pan and replaced the rod bearings just to get me by... pulled the front cover and did a full timing set (there were a few pieces of the driverside guide in the bottom of the oil pan)... then started research on fuel issues... found many people have problems with the wiring harness...

So.. pulled the upper intake and pulled the harness apart. Everything looked good but I went on and redid all the connections and heatshrinked everything. Then pulled the injectors and the number 1 injector was missing pieces... the tip of the injector was basically gone. Picked up a set of reman injectors off evil-bay and swapped them in...

Now the truck is back together... it will start right up and run smoothly... for about 5 seconds, then it drops cylinders and dies...

I pulled the injector harness back apart and grounded each injector to make sure they could fire... one of the injector connectors was fudged... so I replaced it and wired everything back up... same problem but runs a little longer then it did before and a little smoother...

It doesnt make any odd noises or anything of that nature and fuel pressure off the pump is hovering around 35-37psi before it dies and pressure never drops... so not a pump problem...

I dont understand why the truck used to stay running before I pulled everything apart.. it would just misfire... now it doesnt misfire but wont stay running longer then 5 seconds...

I havnt re-checked spark... dont have the tester at the house anymore..

so... WTF?

Anyone have any ideas to what could be causing this? Something that I could have left unhooked or anything like that??

Please help me out... of been searching and searching but have came up empty handed....

thanks
-Chris

did you plug the afm back in? or hook up the inlet pipe between the afm and the throttle body.

After getting a second set of hands... we were able to get the truck to run for a solid minute... only by holding the afm open... not all the way but a good ways...

so... does this mean afm is junk? huge vac leak somewhere? still at a loss...

The best way to test the AFM is to just get a digital multimeter. They are pretty cheap..

AFM. have any friends with a similar 22re? if not, hit up a junk yard, maybe you can get one for cheap and see if it changes anything.

yeah, but whatever you do, do not get one off "Ebay" or a non AISIN/ Denso one from a supply chain...

Or my hands will come through your computer screen and strangle you!

Swapped AFM... same problem... pulled pcv line while running and it idled up like a vac. leak would and then died shortly there after in about the same amount of time it normally runs...

I also found a ground wire that I havnt the slightest to where its supposed to go... its pulled loose from something... its bolted to the firewall near the center and its currently hanging behind the valvecover with a copper terminal on the end (not a ring... looks like its from a plug)

other then that... I cant find anything else wrong...

Anymore ideas??

That ground wire was disconnected/ripped off on my rig when I got her, I have since reattached it. Its goes from the firewall to the hook mounting bolt on the head. It didn't run better or worse with it on or off for me, so I dont believe thats your problem, but still reattach it.

Whenever I have pulled the PCV valve on any of my 22res I have owned (3) they always died within a few seconds due to the huge vacuum leak created.
