DECK LAMP Fuse
Hi
the deck lamp/ cargo bay/ trunk lamp(light stopped working)
i checked the bulb and its good. i also tried the switch on it locally. it has to be the fuse but can't find it.
i have a 89 4runner sr5 v6 4x4 standard. the chiton book has terrible wiring schematics.
any one know where i can look? thank you.

Before you tore into it you do know the deck lamp will only operate when you have the parking lights on, right? It does not light merely by the switch. You probably knew this but just wanted to state this for the next person. The deck light the way it's designed is useless.
4Crawler has a mod to make the light actually useful:

I still need to do this.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE 1989, but on 22R-E's YES, the deck lamp is powered from taillight circuit, and YES it is poor design - when camping in the back you'd would have to scramble over to front to turn tail lights on just to use the deck lamp (DUH! Like I always say, Back then, Toyota Mechanical engineers were better than its electrical engineers.).
I have since rewired mine (here). It not takes its power from the dome light circuit.
I have also replaced the stock fixture with LED array. So much brighter. The stock deck lamp housing is now wired to be a night light. I'll put a red LED in there.

Hey RAD, the 1989s that OP & I have are the same body style as yours. It's the 1990 that became 2nd generation. To further confuse things the 1989 pickup is the "new" body style, the front clip is the same as 2nd gen 4Runner. I know you knew this and forgot. To simplify things I generally order things other than engine parts for an '88. Under the hood my '89 22RE has some 2nd gen things like the brake fluid reservoir is the new type.
I can't think of one time I've used the rear deck lamp. It's a bizarre design.
If the other 4Runner site can have five pages on the 4th gen tissue box holder we can talk about this a few pages.

O.P.,
Break out the multi-meter. Here's the schematic:
W-B (pin 4) on deck lamp housing should always have ground.
Green (pin5) on front deck lamp switch should have 12V when tail lights are on.
One position of the switch sends 12V to LightGreen-Red wire (pin4 at switch= pin 1 at deck light housing). The other switch position sends 12V to Light Green wire ( pin3 at switch = pin 2 at deck lamp housing)
