Dead Gauges, No Alternator charge, Blown fuse

I need help from all you electrical wizards. I have my engine fuse that keeps blowing on my 88 4runner 3.0 5 speed. All gauges, except speedo drop to zero, truck still running. Backlight still works. I am pretty sure this one feeds my alternator signal because I almost made it home before it dimmed to death.

Unplugged the alternator and still blows fuse, what readings am I supposed to see out of that pigtail?

Unplugged the rear back up switch from the transmission and it still blows,

Did the same to the whole cluster, and the cruise control thing by the left fender….nothing

Grounds and connections were all checked,...

There was once a relay clicking sound by the stereo center console area, closer to the passenger side, it happened when I put in a new fuse,…sometimes.. not all the time and could not make it repeat.

What else am I missing? What readings should I be getting? I have the manual but it’s for the 22re…..same pins and readings?

Any and all help is appreciated…Thank you.

Wink

I would say you have a short to ground someplace in the harness if you have unplugged all the loads.

a bad ground would cause a problem completing the circuit.

But a loose connection could cause a fuse to blow.

These electrical problems can be real fun.

Good luck

your alternator plug number 1 at the top @ 2000 rpm13.9 to 15.1 depending on outside temperature

#2 ignition switch at IG engine not running 0 to 4 volts

#3 is the chargelight wire :jessica:

Fixed!!

I know it's a bit late for this reply, but I just went through a weeks worth of 15A fuses, no gauges, and an alternator that wouldn't put out. If you find the backup light switch on the left side of the transmission, follow it up past the plug and just over the top of the transmission housing. About 3 or 4 inches above the truck side of the plug the wire was in a bind and rubbed through. Hope this helps someone. Oh. Mine has a 5 speed so I don"t Imagine this will be much help for trucks with automatics. Good Luck.

Here was my experience

FIXED!!! Mine was the Reverse Lights on the Tranny. It has a protective sleeve and depending on how the sleeve slides, it can cover the wires where they rub against the tranny leaving them exposed. Below is other fixes for this problem.
