Sorry for my ignorance. I thought my left CV joint is going because when I crank the wheel left it makes a horrible cracking sort of sound, when I am off road it makes the sound with less turning of the steering wheel. The right side doesent do it. It sounds like metal on metal.

I searched the forums and found alot of people saying they cant go into 4x4 because of it. I have no problems going into 4x4 and driving around.

My boot looks fine.

I also realized I have no idea what a CV joint auctually does. (gonna google it next)

So now I am totally confused as to what the sound may be. Any ideas?

 

there could be no grease in the boot and the joing is binding up

 

Could be the steering stops, check and see if the plastic caps are worn out. If so add some grease or antisieze compound to the ends.
CV joints are just a type of universal joint that can handle higher angles than normal driveshaft U-joints. Used mostly on front wheel drive vehicles because of the steering.
Worn ones make clicking/rattling sounds, especially when turning, but if it's really bad it could sound like metal on metal.

 

Well it doesent rattle or click. Seems like the build up thing because its just like one or two cracking-squeaking (for lack of a better description) sounds coming from the front left wheel well area.

It is kind of loud, makes me cringe every time.
