CV Boots on an 87 IFS
Hello - New to the forums. Just picked up a 87 4Runner IFS 4x4 5spd, the CV boots are all blown up front and it needs a new alternator - But other than that she is in good shape for the $750 I paid for her.
Is the replacement procedure listed at: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...18frontdri.pdf the same on the 87 as on the 93?
If not, does anyone have the FSM page for the same procedure on an 87?
Gonna just replace the axles and CV boots at the same time most likely as it has 176k miles on it, then I will have a couple of spares for the trail. Not tackled something like that before tho, my mechanical experience up to this point is Oil Changes and Brake jobs. Hope to do all the work on my new Toy myself tho and learn as I go along.
Thank you.

If you can do brakes it should not be a problem. Just remove the hub and get it down to the rotor. The one problem I wasn't planned for was the large nuts behind the hub, I believe it was a 2 inch or 2 1/4. You definitely need it to get the hub assembly off.

I live less than a mile from Harbor Freight (Dangerously close) I also have quite a few tools. Not sure if I have something quite that big, but I dont mind buying whatever is needed to pull the parts.

54mm Toyota spindle nut socket. You don't need it to pull the CV half-shafts, but you do need it if you plan on doing your own wheel bearing/rotor maintainence. So it's a good thing to have regardless, alot of people try to get by w/o one but it's not smart. And that's a fair price including shipping. The whole operation is a pain in the neck, but you gotta learn how eventually.
Here's a quick tip: Pull the lower shock mount bolt, with it out of the way the cv shaft will be easier to remove/install.

There's just a snap-ring and a bolt w/washer in the end. You have to open the hub locker to remove the bolt, then remove it (hub locker) to get to the snap-ring IIRC. Then the half-shaft will slide out.

I'm new here - Never heard of em!!! Plus I'm impatient - Hense why I purchased what I needed as soon as I knew I needed it. But then he changed is mind and I didn't actually need it for the CV boots! lol.
Just checked the pics of your rig. A little scary how similar yours looked to mine and how much I want mine to look like yours! lol. Love what you did with the center console. Mine is all torn up like yours looked like in one of the first pictures.

Yep, temporary lapse. I wasn't remembering the first time I changed a boot and that I hadn't yet purchased the spindle nut socket at that point, either. Anywho, that's http://wabfab.org/ so's ya know.

Oh - and since you're gonna 'wheel it, you should knock out the studs and replace them with bolts. Will make future CV changes MUCH easier. M10-1.25x30mm IIRC.

Yep, to remove and replace the cv shafts, all you really need are some common sockets, some combination wrenches, snap-ring pliers, and perhaps a chisel (or drift) and hammer for the cone washers. You don't need a spindle socket, heck, you don't even have to take the wheel off.
Pay a little attention to how the hub comes off. Having a buddy in the cab to apply brake when you are loosening the nuts on the inner flange of the cv shaft helps too.
I removed 3 of the 6 studs from each side and ground down the splines so they are snug, but slip out easily.
