I have a 93 4runner and had ome shocks and springs, bj spacers and manual hubs installed about a year ago. since then it has been in the shop twice because the cv axle on the driver side keeps breaking. When in the shop they tell me its because of the angle so they replace the cv axle and mess with the torsion height. To remind you the passenger side rides with no problems. Could it be that the hub on that side wasn't installed right and therefore causing the cv joint to break? I dunno enough about it, does anybody have any ideas on whats going on here?

Are both cv's the same brand? One may be stronger than the other and the angle gets to it first.

 

I haven't been off road with it at all. This is happening to it just by doing everyday driving. the first one i had on there when the suspension was installed was a toyota cv axle the new one thats broken now is after market.

 

How is it breaking? Inner joint, outer, ripping boots, shaft itself ...

It's no biggie to change a CV - definitely not something you need a shop to do.

 

The outer boot is tearing and leaking all the grease i guess. It sounds real bad though. Whenever going over the smallest of bumps it makes a loud poping noise. I wish i had the knowldge and tools to do this myself. Thats why i call upon you guys who know your stuff and i can know what im talking about when i take it to the shop.

 

Those angles are steep but the cv's should not turn when the hubs (manual locking) are unlocked. If you have autolocking hubs then something is wrong with them. As the CV's should not turn when hubs are unlocked. I have driven my truck with the front axle removed and the cv shafts tied so they would not dangle about. You've got hub issue or you t-case is in 4wd.

 

Warn manual hubs. Never been in the locked position.

Here do this, go under your truck, Leave the hubs in the unlocked way, grab the cv chaft and try to rotate it. Member, leave it in 2wd. If they dont rotate whentheyare unlocked, try the locked position.

 

Could this type of damage still be done even if the cv's aren't moving?

 

Nope, i dont think so.

Because with the hubs unlocked and it's in 2wd the cv's should not rotate at all.

 

Possible but I doubt it. It would be simply from the pressure of cv angles on the boot. You're further than I'd run.

 

It would be unlikely for you to see this rate of failure if the hubs are unlocked, however, with BJ spacers, you COULD be getting too much droop travel and that could be harming the CV's.

 

Ok. Shaft moves when hubs are unlocked and doesn't move when they are locked.

 

BJ spacers are supposed to help this type of lift right? Any thing that can be done to get a better angle?

 

No, Bj's make it worse. Loosen your tbars.

 

easing off on the t-bars, reducing lift, bump stops to limit droop, a drop bracket. 4crwaler sells a setup to lower front axle.

 

I bought this setup just as strapp22 advertised it. BJ spacers were recomended with this suspension. I had it all installed at toyota of dallas.

 

Time for a differential drop then.
