Good news and bad news. Good news is that I picked up a short block from a t100 that had 30k miles for only $100!!! It was in a fire and most of the mechanical parts were salvaged. Bad news is that it has been sitting in storage for a good 5 years and has rust around all the cylinder walls and mating surfaces.

Wednesday I'm going to start to tear it apart and send the block to the machine shop hopefully next week to get it sparkly clean looking like new. didn't want to do a full rebuild but I guess it looks like I am now lol I'm uploading pics right now

Man 30k on that bad boy for $100? I think you'll be much happier with that than buying a short block. You'll know how well it was put together, no corners were cut, etc. And for $100 (plus machine shop costs)? I think you came out better this way! Looking forward to the build. It brings back good memories of rebuilding my 3.0 after spinning a rod bearing back in '03.

He was asking $200 for it but I was under the impression that it was ready to bolt some heads on and go, I went to see it and it's definitely gunna need to be machined because it's been in storage for a while and you can see all the rust. So I talked him down to $100 because I would have to drop more money at the machine shop.

And i just soaked the cylinder walls with pb blaster earlier, gunna do that all day today and tomorrow before I start to disassemble.... I'm not sure if I should put new bearings in anyways since I'm going to completely disassemble it but I'll keep you guys posted

So just dissassembled the short block earlier, all 6 pistons, rods and crank out. Took 2 freeze plugs out but quit because getting those two was a battle and I hit my hand a good couple times with the hammer lol

Gunna try to go to a machine shop tomorrow but I might not have time. Gunna post up pics in a bit of the work

Hey guys had some delays, took the machine shop 3 weeks to finish boring and prepping my block because they had a ton of work. Got it back Wednesday, Wednesday morning put in my engnbldr order for the master kit and received it yesterday afternoon! Super fast and was extremely happy with everything! Had a question about the pistons, had to buy .020 oversized and the ones I got were stamped with .50 so I emailed him at 9:30pm and he responded saying .50mm is the same as .020! I wasn't expecting a reply last night, and within 5 mins, I'm loving the customer service! Ok so today I'm probably gun a prep the block for paint and maybe start taking clearances if I can find some plastiguage locally

Question: I'm completely clueless as to what color to paint the block! My 4runner is the dark green but dont really wanna go with black.... I was thinking silver or red?? I've seen red 22res and they look sexy

I'm doing a 3.0 swap myself. It is going slow tho. Cannot get the crank bolt out. I put a 450 ft lb impact on it and Kroiled it and nothin. Tried a breaker bar and a 3ft cheater pipe. Nothin. Any ideas. Maybe heat It and just replace the seal in the balancer? Also my original 3.0 did not have the oil cooler but this one does. Does that make it mandatory to have?

my crank bolt and cam bolts were easy to get loose because my motor was locked up lol i put my 1/2'drive rachet on, then i took off the handle from my jack and put that on my rachet ( i guess its the same idea as a cheater pipe?) and just got that sucker off! wasnt too bad because like i said my motor was locked up... as for the oil cooler, i think they only came on the 3vze's with towing packages, im going to put mine on, personal preference really but i have seen a couple other threads where people buy the oil filter union from the dealer and install a second oil filter! good luck dude! lemmie know if you have any more questions, im pretty deep in this rebuild already hahaha


ok so today i got to finish prepping the block... finally took out all the freeze plugs and almost **** myself because i almost got one lost inside the block! got them all out tho haha then i cleaned it, sanded it a bit, and shot some paint its lookin like a brand new motor now

and lets not forget that !! i cant stop looking at them they are sexy! engnbldr is the man!
tomorrow im probably gunna install my freeze plugs and paint some more parts.... cant start assemlbly because im waiting for my torque wrench to come in the mail

Heat, and a bigger cheater bar. I used my jack handle (5 ft) on my Snapon Breaker bar, set it up at a good angle, and then put all my weight under it. SNAP - it will come off, but will make a racket that will make you think you broke something...

Thanks for taking time to photograph and post photos of your engine rebuild. Looks good. From being able to see the block,pistons,crank, etc. It seems to me that the 3vz is really a very stout engine and I can see it's possible for these motors to last for a long time.

Thanks! I really wish I was but they are way out of the budget I've been looking for used ones on eBay but no luck. Maybe in the summer I'll throw some on because right now I'm not working and I start school in 2 weeks lol the life of a broke college student!

Your welcome! The 3vze is a great motor I love it! Mine lasted 245k miles and the head gaskets were never touched! Only at the dealer for the recall in 97 I believe. Just gotta take care of them and they will take care of you! Needless to say this will be the last time I wheel this runner hahahaha got too much money in this rebuild and it's gunna look to good to get muddy
