cores and longblock 22res
I found a few reasonably priced longblock 22res on ebay for about $1300. I was thinking of going with those, but I had some questions here.
First, how does one return a core? If they one I'm receiving is strapped onto a crate, how do I strap the return? (assuming I need crimping tools and metal straps like we used in the warehouse where I worked.)
I'm also seeing vendors who schedule for your core to be returned. Has anyone ever used these?
The two vendor/usernames I'm looking at are rebuild01 and promarengine. Are there any others you guys would recommend? I've been disputing whether I should rebuild it myself, take it to a shop, or buy a drop in replacement. I've decided on the drop in replacement because it's faster and I don't trust myself to do the rebuild. Plus, these come with warranties. This is definitely the route I'm going to go.
If anyone knows of a vendor in colorado (anywhere in colorado and southern wyoming. I'm willing to travel inside of the state.) that sells long blocks (not short blocks) let me know. I found a few sellers on craigslist, but they want $1700 for a short block.

251k miles, the compression is getting low, and it's drinking away almost as much oil as it is gas. I just did an oil change 2 weeks ago and it's already down a quart. Within that 2 weeks, I've only gone to work and back, which is about 15 miles. So 30 miles per day...that's too much oil. There's no major leaks, so I've determined it's either the valves in the head or the piston rings. Since the engine is old and tired anyway, I figured I'd just get it rebuilt or replaced. Rather than take the time to replace just the head and find out that's not the problem, I'm going to do an overhaul.

I don't know of any Colorado locals, but if I was to buy a rebuilt motor I think I would go with Oregon Engine Rebuilders. I believe they use the same parts that Ted does. And their prices seem really reasonable. Or you could spen $4200 and get a LCE longblock lol.

I forgot about Oregon engine rebuilders. $1400 for the super stock engine...now that's that I want. I think I found my vendor. How does the core return work with them? By "how does it work" I mean how does one typically package up an engine to be shipped and call for a pickup/delivery?

I thought about that. Just pay the $300 non-returned core charge fee and then sell the engine for about $150 locally. I'd be willing to take a hit on the price just to get rid of it quickly.

It might be easier than having to deal with shipping it back. Or you could keep the engine and learn how to rebuild it in your spare time without having to worry about messing anything up.
If I had the option to keep it and mess around with it in my garage (if I had one) that's probably what I would do.

The cost of living here in Colorado is really high and it's nearly impossible to find a house to rent that lets you have dogs. Hence the reason I'm trying to get the heck out of here. This place blows.
I would love to build an engine on a stand and use performance parts and build a powerful machine. But that's not going to happen until I get my own garage.

I hear you. Are you going to go with the super stock though? I doubt you can go wrong with one of those.
Leadville is super dog friendly by the way. There just isn't many jobs up here.

Yes, I'm going to try and go with the super stock engine. I was looking at the RV head with the torkr camshaft from engnbldr, but since I can get it attached to a longblock that's less work for me.

Ugh. I just checked the oil and it seems fine. It is burning it, but the compression is about 155 lbs per cylinder. The oil level is good for me changing it a few weeks ago. I may just go and replace the head with an engnbldr head and see if that helps. Could just be bad valves/guides.
I hate this indecisiveness. One day the oil is a problem, the next it's looking full. I think I'm too paranoid.
