Converting EFI to a Carburetor

Converting EFI to a Carburetor
Hello, i am new to site and was told maybe i could get some help from you guys. I am working on a 1987 yota pickup with a 22re engine. It currently is a 5 speed, however i am converting to a 1986 automatic. I am only using the running gear out of the truck, so please keep that in mind with my wiring questions. I would like to make this bare bones, i want to remove the efi and put a carb on it. What all has to be changed, Intake for sure, but will the head, distributor and coil work?
And then to complicate things i am adding the automatic trans to the equation, if i do away with the efi, i will remove the computer, but my auto trans has alot of wires coming from it, I am assuming being an 1986 its an overdrive, will the trans work with out a computer? I thank you guys in advance for the help with this project.

You would need a dist & coil/ignitor from a carb engine. Try to find a manual trans. Prob cost you more to try to get an auto to work than to buy a stick.

I am not sure about the trans but you will need a carb intake and the carb distributor. Then you should be good. You may be able to buy a box that will run the trans but I don't know why you would want to auto anyway. It makes the 22re a dog...

Auto Trans
Ok, so will the trans work at all with out the computer??? is there a different auto trans that could be recommended to me?? I want to stay automatic if i can.

EFI Question
OK, so doing away with the EFI is fairly easy, but if i run the auto trans that requires the computer, what can i eliminate from the efi that does not really need to be there, this truck will be off road only, i want to simplify thing if this is possible. Thanks

-learn to drive a stick
-convert your 22r block to a 22re version.
while first gen EFI wasnt great i still belive its heads and tails better than a carb
my expertise is only on the 89 and above stuff so i dont have much to add for the auto behind a 22r. (if one existed)

I agree...I don;t think a auto existed with the 22r...i do know that 85 was the first year for the auto in the trucks

There is no such thing as "removing stuff that does not need to be there". The trans most likley needs the TPS, AFM, Temperature as well as maybe a pulse from the distributor to know what and when to shift.
It may work without any wires but I would assume that it won't.
just my 2cents

Things to consider:
carb intake manifold
fuel pump
distributor
coil
ignitor
exhaust manifold (02 sensors)
radiator/tranny cooler
shift linkage
sender/vacuum plugs in manifold/head
and so on and so forth...
There is absolutely no reason to convert from EFI to carb on these trucks! You're better off buying a complete engine or even a different truck entirely.
