Cold Start Question

So I bought a 1st Gen 4Runner with a 22re, when I bought the truck it would take the car 3 attempts of turning over before it would finally crank. Once the engine was warm the truck would have no problems starting. I recently installed a brand new engine and the truck still takes about 3 attempts to finally start. It has new plugs, cap and rotor, Ignition wires are from 2003.
I have looped the fuel pump at the test block to see if there are any leaks in the fuel system, there are none. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

When u installed the new engine were the upper and lower intake reused? If so, it still has the original cold start injector and cold start injector time switch. Either could be the culprit, especially for just cold start only issues.

X2 on the cold start injector or cold start injector time switch, if re-used from the old engine

Yep both of theses switches are from the old engine. Is there any was of testing these switches? Like through resistance readings

disconnect the plug from the cold start injector and put a voltmeter on the terminals then have someone turn the key to start the engine.
if you get voltage, the time switch is probably working properly and the injector may be faulty so check the resistance of the terminals on the injector- should be 2-4 ohms.
if you don't get voltage, it could be that it's too warm for the cold start system to operate, could be the wiring or could be the switch is faulty. The terminals on the time switch should have continuity when the temp is below approximately 65F and no continuity above that.

yes, the cold start injector time switch does have resistance values based on temperature. I forget what the specific temp was, but it will have continuity at a colder temperature to turn the injector on. You can check it a couple of ways, unbolt the injector from the plenum while cold and have someone crank it over and look for spray or you can rig up a light bulb into the cold start injector plug and watch to see if it pulses on and off while cranking. There are a few threads on here for specific tests procedures of the cold start switch. Good luck

Ok thanks a lot guys, I will try all of these procedures. I also noticed that there is a cold start relay behind the passenger kick panel, I should probably check that as well.

The relay behind the passenger kick panel is probably the Circuit Opening Relay- it turns the fuel pump on when you're cranking the engine and when the AFM signals sufficient airflow to indicate the engine is running.
If it is not turning on when cranking, it could cause a similar symptom to what you're experiencing.

im having the same exact issue. i know automotive stuff is expensive but wow, these little injectors run up to $200. i also just did an engine swap too. could i take the injector and time switch from the other engine (this is going from an 87 to a 91 22re)? is this swap something a novice could do?

anyone have any issues with this model:
