code 14 died while driving on highway

ok my 1995 4runner limited with the 3.0 v6 with 201k miles died while driving down the road it has had the check engine light on for the past week and it drove fine but i still took it to be checked out its code 14 ignition system... when it died I had my multimeter with me and i checked a few things the distributor coils they where 180, 153, 160 and the output of the coil when i cranked it over was 33volts. so the coils in the igniton are fine according to fsm? and the coil is outputting voltage but is that enough voltage? and what about the ignitor how do i test that it is working? any starting places from past experience?

Start with what the FSM says to do about Code 14

Ignition Signal

IGF signal from igniter is not input to ECM for 6 consecutive ignition.

• Open or short in IGF or IGT circuit from igniter to ECM
• Igniter
• ECM

"See Page EG2-195"
That's how you determine if it's being caused by an open or short in IGF or IGT circuit from igniter to ECM, a faulty igniter, or a faulty ECM.

To check that the igniter is working properly, and/or why Code 14 is present, means confirming these things:
  • The ECM is sending the IGT signal to the igniter
  • The igniter is receiving the IGT signal, because there is no open or short circuit in the IGT signal wiring from the ECM
  • The ignition signal(IGT signal) wiring between the igniter and distributor(igniter to ignition coil wires and ignition coil to distributor wire) has no open or short circuit, and the distributor is receiving the ignition signal(IGT signal)
  • The distributor is functioning/within specifications, and is not causing the lack of ignition/IGF(ignition confirmation) signal from the igniter to the ECM
  • The IGF signal wiring between the igniter and the ECM has no open or short circuit causing the lack of IGF signal to the ECM
  • The igniter is grounded and sending the IGF signal to the ECM

If all of those things are confirmed then:
  • There is no open or short in the IGT or IGF circuit from the igniter to the ECM
  • The igniter isn't bad(failing to send the IGF signal to the ECM).
  • The ECM is bad(failing to receive the IGF signal from the igniter).
