Clutch chatter

I have a 1989 4x4 with 22RE and I'm getting a weird clutch chatter. The problem only occurs when the clutch is released. Idling in neutral you can hear the clutch chattering but as soon as I touch the pedal it goes away. I can't hear it in any gear under a load except for 4th and on decel it goes away. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? The clutch is new ish and shouldn't be worn out. I don't know how long ago it was replaced but my father had it done roughly 5 years ago and I haven't put that many miles on the truck since I got it from him. Maybe 25,000mi. We've both had manual transmission vehicles all our lives so I know it's not from abuse or being inexperienced. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Did you replace the pilot bearing when you replaced the clutch?

Fluid level is fine, Not sure if the slave or master was replaced or not? I'm assuming the pilot bearing/throw out bearing was replaced with the new clutch but 100% sure. I didn't do work to the truck until after I got it from my dad. He had a newer engine put in and the clutch was replaced at the same time

I did happen to think of something that might have caused the noise. I just recently fixed an oil leak so yesterday before the noise occured i took a can of engine degreaser with me to the car wash and sprayed the entire engine and bell housing down to get all the oil and dirt build up off. immediately after that is when i noticed the noise. Could i possibly have gotten some junk down in the bell housing? if so where could it have gone in at?

When I think of clutch chatter it is between the clutch and flywheel at the point of clutch engagement and the truck vibrates/chatters. Oil or solvents aren't especially a good thing on the disc or flywheel. You described a noise with no pressure on the pedal, it can be the throw-out bearing and or the attaching point of the throw-out bearing. I believe there is a clip that should hold it on.

kc is on the right track here, what you are likely hearing is from the throw-out bearing, It's been a long time, but there should be 2 clips holding it on the clutch fork that may be missing or bent and letting it rattle, or the bearing could be failing (maybe the grease was washed out when you pressure washed it? not likely. Does the noise go away with the slightest pressure on the clutch pedal? Does it go away if you put your foot under the pedal and pull up slightly? Are you absolutely sure the sound is coming from the transmission/bell housing area? you may want to check the pedal pivot/mount/bracket for cracks unless you are sure it's coming from inside the bell housing.

Is your trany a w56?
Had exactly same issue a few months ago, Every gear but 4th (as well as pushing in clutch) sounded like rattle can. Changed clutch and bearing same issue. Turned out to be a bearing inside transmission... Few month later with a remanufactured w56 in there and all is back to normal no more shatter. Reason 4th is quiet is because it's direct in the w56... Also obviously when you press the he clutch pedal trany stops spinning.. Good luck

"When I think of clutchchatter it is between the clutch and flywheel at the point of clutch engagement and the truck vibrates/chatters."

this is my exact issue ONLY when my 1987 $runner is cold, and only for about the first 4-5 times I take off from a dead stop. The clutch was replaced 3000 miles ago, new pressure plate, throw out bearing, and resurfaced flywheel. Just started 2 days ago, looking at the posts, I will check the adjustment from the salve cylinder today, engine has been rebuilt, so no oil leaks. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
