Cleaning tops of pistons & block before heads...

Hey Ya'll,

Have all parts! Pulled water pump this evening and fixing to put-er back together.

How do you all clean the tops of the pistons? ONe has quite a bit of soot on it. I hate to use carb cleaner for fear the cleaner might run down into the rings causing problems. I tried my dremel with a wire brush (on #1) but that didn't do well either.

Looked through the "chives" but could't find anything. Appreciate the help. Hopefully, after this, I'll leave you all alone for another 148K miiles.

Respectfully,

DJ

P.S. Any of you all get to Western Arkansas, a full alum. 80 is on me.

as recommended in another thread, i used a brillo-type disc attachment on my drill. made quick work of all that carbon buildup. the brillo pads were a couple bucks each at my local True Value hardware store.

I was wondering this myself. Not for my Yota but for an '82 Honda three wheeler I'm rebuilding. The top of the piston and the valves all have a buildup on them. I will have to take a look at True Value.

Hey DJ, know where Winslow is? Howdy neighbor.

Something interesting....
I've a friend here in Winslow who's been a long time cert'd mechanic and race car builder that told me when I was rebuild my top end (3vze) not to bother with the pistons....if it's not real excessive. He said,"Might even help protect them."

Hey thook,

Do I know where Winslow is? I spent most of my senior year at Devils Den. Skipped a 3 hour bulding trades class at Springdale HS & roamed DD. lol

Good to hear from you,

DJ

I used Permatex gasket remover, since it's almost a gel in thickness. Spray it on and let it sit until the carbon bubbles. Some required a little bit of scrubbing, but not much.

Oh and wear gloves, man that stuff stings.

I've actually been doing that but it is slow going. The pistons and valves I'm cleaning have 25 years of carbon buildup on them lol.
