Or, and I know this might be waaaay out there, it's really freakin' cold and that's typical exhaust of an engine that's just been started so the dealership can take a pic of the truck...it is well below zero in North Dakota at this time of year. That stuff on the ground is ice.

No kidding...

You could pick up a 1st gen runner with a great body and bad engine/tranny for 500 - 900 easy. And then you could put a brand new drivetrain in for under 8k. And now you have a great 1st gen with 0 miles on the engine/tranny.

That thing was probably sitting for years, and then someone got it running and prettied it up with new wheels and a wax job trying to make a buck,

A 20 year old truck is going to have problems no matter how many miles are on it, it's got nothing to do with miles, only age, and who knows if the odometer has been tampered with or if the engine is the original motor, things you can check, but aren't likely to,

You are still going to have leaky seals, rotted rubber hoses, and all kinds of other things

I would rather have a '98 with 4x the miles that has been well taken care of, and you can find that for $9k easy

Bottom line is that you still have a '88, with '88 styling (I like it, but other's might not), '88 comfort, '88 reliability, and '88 resale value

If I was rich, I would pay someone to post here for me and ask questions

Oh, and the other day I found a 2 door second gen 4runner for sale on seattle craigslist, it was only $1200, body and interior were fine, just wouldn't start
