Check Engine Light Question

Hey Guys, I've been lurking around here for about a month or so, and finally decided to post something.

I just bought a 92 4Runner SR5 V6 5-speed 4x4 with 197,xxx miles on it (for $1200, SCORE!). Had a mechanic buddy check it out, didn't need a whole hell of a lot of work, just some new axles, clutch, and tranny mount. Everything else checked out okay. My only concern is my check engine light came on. The first time it threw codes 14 (ECU not getting signal from ingniter)and 25(air/fuel mixture running lean). I figured maybe some distributor wires got knocked loose or something, so I reseated all the cables and reset the light. About 200 miles later, CEL came back on. This time, it only threw code 25. Reset it again and it stayed off for about another 200-250 miles.

My questions are these. I know that a code 25 can be caused by a number of problems, but is there a "common" (hopefully cheap and simple) problem that would cause it. Secondly, if I reset the light, and it takes that long to come back, does that mean it's an intermittent problem, or does it take the ECU that long to register the code?

Thanks guys. I've already learned a crap-load from the forums, and am looking forward to learning a lot more!

-Tommy

It takes that long for the computer to learn the fuel mapping. Sounds like you might have an AFM going bad.

Is AFM the same as the MAF? Please don't flame me if that's a dumb question... be gentle, I'm a noob... Thanks!

Generally speaking the AFM (or more accurately VAFM- volume[tric] air flow meter) does the same thing as a MAF sensor (mass air flow), however the two operate on very different principles with the former being mechanical and a latter being electrical/electronic with no moving parts.

Other things that could cause a lean trouble code could be the O2 sensor, the fuel pressure regulator not raising fuel pressure off idle, vacuum leaks, leaks in the intake duct between the throttle body and VAFM, exhaust leaks, fuel injector(s) clogged, coolant temperature sender... lot's of things.

First I'd check is the duct and boots between the throttle to the VAFM- any cracks there could allow air to bypass the VAFM. Then check the PCV hoses for cracks.

Cool. I 'll check that out. Thanks abecedarian.

jschaffer0525 - In that picture they were BFG Mud Terrains 33x10.5. They were pretty worn out when I bought it, and noisy as hell on the freeway, so I replaced them with BFG All Terrains 32x11.5. much better ride...

I have a screwy o2 sensor, it throws a 25 and 26 (lean and rich).
so x2 on the o2 sensor.

Was waiting for tomorrow to get in there and check out vacuum lines and whatnot, but my check engine light turned off all on it's own. Lets hope that the problem just fixed itself (crossing fingers)

Either that, or the check engine light burned out. Either way, I'm okay... j/k

Hi Everyone,

I'm newbie in Toyota and on this site too. I hope this is not off topic.

I've got an error code p1228! [Wastegate Failed Open (Under Pressure)] What does it mean really and what part to be changed?
Symptom is that the engine suffocates of power. 0-70km/h is about 1 minute sometimes more, sometimes less. After an hour driving the power comes back and works properly until next cold start.

My mechanic is not sure what to do, so I don't want him screw up something!
Can anyone help?

Thanks

This is a great site!
