My CEL isnt working. At all.
I replaced the bulb, cleaned the contacts. It wont come on.
The shop tells me Im getting a engine code 71, but I cant verify it. Is there any other way to pull the codes???

Truck is a 87 4x4 22r.

 

if its a 22r i dont think you have a ecu even or is yours efi fuel injected?

 

Its a 22r, so no EFI.
And It should have a ecu as far as I know.

 

wow i didnt know that man well im not sure what to say maybe test the wires and see if your getting power at the light if not trace her back until you find it if it goes to your ecu then you found it sorry man i really though the carbed trucks were just one wire motors didnt know they had ecus lol

 

i still dont think 22r's have ECUs.... i might be wrong but i've never seen one.

 

yeah they have an ecu mainly for emissions and spark control
guide I have says the 22r ecu does not report diagnostic codes so that could explain the CEL issue.
so ask the shop how they know what the code is
but it's possible something's amiss... code 71 is EGR malfunction

 

I figured out the code 71 thing myself. The shop didnt tell me what the code was. No ecu eh? Even a California truck.

I meant that the shop told me I had a "No Vacuum to EGR" error AKA "Code 71".

And yes, no ECU that can tell me anything useful.

 

If you truly have a 22R I can't help, but the 22RE check engine light derives its power from the engine fuse I believe, so see if it has 12 volts on it all the time. The EFI computer send a ground when it activates the check engine light. If you have no vacuum, to the EGR trace the vacuum diagram and see where the vacuum stops. The EGR solenoid may be bad.

Yea its defiantly a 22r carb and all.
I hadn't thought of checking the voltage to the fuse. When it stops raining Ill check it out.

 

Page 196 to 199 on the FSM , shows the test procedure for the ECU, you will need a voltmeter, 2 safety pins, and a laptop or printer, to bring the PDF out tot he truck to follow the directions. Thats for the EFI system, yours should be somewhere arround 180.

BTW, I just had the exact same issue on my truck... turned out the main EFI fuse (15amp) was partially blown, so instead of being dead, it allowed 1.16volts through, instead of 12v.... causing all types of funky issues/results..
