Check Engine Light?

I have an "85" 4Runner 5 speed w/22RE in it. My question is when I first turn the truck on there's no CEL I can rev it up still nothing until I start driving and hit 2nd gear then the light comes on and stays on. I've had the truck about a month and would just like to find out what the possible causes could. Thanks

What code is it?

Could be your o2 sensor but just a guess without having the code...

Check out the link below:

http://troublecodes.net/Toyota/

Just grab yourself a paperclip and jump E1 and TE1 on the diagnostic port shown (I think you have the circular port on the older trucks). Do this with the truck OFF. Then, turn the key to ON but don't start the engine. Look at your dash and you'll see your CEL blinking, count the number of blinks (or tally them) and you'll get your code. Note that if there's multiple codes, it'll do them in quick succession, pause, and then start over again. You can do this as long as you need to. Then refer to the chart on the webpage to narrow down what's wrong with the engine. If you know how to fix it, go right ahead. If not, post here again.

The diagnostic port is under the hood. It is connected to the fuse box behind the battery... Let me know how you make out!

On an 85, the "diagnostic port" is on the driver's side, inner fender. Looks like a plug with no connection. Jumper with paper clip, read engine light flashes. Here's the procedure, sorry I'm not more help, mine's an 89.

Using Google will yield more results. And these trucks don't have a port like OBD II cars do. Get that notion outta yer head. Much simpler.

That's right! Sorry, I forgot mine are 87-88. The 85 has a plug that is next to the ignition coil. Sorry!

It was a round connector that is held to the side by a rubber socket/boot. There is 2 of them there a large on and the bigger one.

Use photobucket for uploading and hosting pics. There's a how to around here, newbie tech section, I think.

Here's both ports that were connected to the left fender under the hood. Put paper clip in larger port didn't get any flashing from the CEL
