Check Engine Light 22RE

Well i was driving home today on about a 3 hour drive and after about 2 hours of driving i noticed thst my truck wasn;t running like normal, seemed like a little bit of lost power, and all of a sudden i feel i hesitastion in power as i was driving along in 5th gear, and i look down and my CEL was on, but i kept driving for a few seconds and it was off and all seemed normal, but then once again no power and hesitation, so i checked all my gauges and oil pressure, engine temp and battery was all good, but i did notice that it seemed to do this whenever i stepped on the throtle but when i eased it on it seemed to be alot better but still not the same, its like my truck is not getting enough gas or something is blocking the exhaust, but i just did my exhaust right from the header back about a couple months ago, complete without a converter, but with a resonater, and a high flow mufler, so i don't think that it could be clogged, so finally i pull over and pop my hood and everything looks fine excpet my manifold is glowing red hot. so i reall have nop idea what could be the problem, but the light does not stay on all the time is seems to just come and go every few minutes, if anybody could help that would be great thank you all

Pull the CEL code. I'd almost bet you'll see an O2 code. Doesn't necessarily mean it's the O2 sensor, but it may be running lean. I got an O2 code once near the end of a 300km trip. Turned out my fuel pump was starving the engine.

You can usually goto Autozone or Advance auto something like that and have them pull the codes for you. Make sure to write them down exactly and then come back and post someone will have a suggestion for you.

well i checked my codes today and turns out code 31 came up, which is the Mass Airflow Sensor, so i got that tested and half of the tests were fine and half where not, so we reset the system and now ever since the truck has been running perfect. so i really don't know whats going on, if anybody has any input that would be great, thanks,

My sentiments also. If I had taken that advice early on, I probably would have saved money from fixing stuff that didn't need to be messed around with in the first place. But then again, I wouldn't have learned as much either.

In this case, it sounds like you've got a fix, so don't mess around with it, especially with the MAF sensor.

well it just confuses me because i don't know what caused the problem in the first place and why it owuld be fine now after it is all reset, and have the problem not reacure, if something was not running right, it should still not be running right.

That's why they call'em 'computers'. These little electronic devices are far from perfect. When your desktop computer starts locking up, what's the first thing you should do? Right. Reboot it. Maybe the ECM just had a hiccup. Remeber, we are dealing with computer technology that is over 20 years old. Keep an eye on the AFM. It may be on it's way out.

So i figured out my problem, turns out it was a clogged fuel filter, runs perfect now that i changed it, but don;t ask me why the CEL would give me a mas air flow code. anybody have any explanation?

When mine threw an O2 code,, I had a bad fuel pump. The electronic error detection systems are not very good at deciphering mechanical malfunctions. That's what put me on the wrong track on my O2 code. I replaced the O2 sensor, did a tune up, and even took the 4Runner to a transmission shop to have them drive it. ( It was jerking and bucking like the tranny was goin out ). The fuel starvation was only intermittent. That's why I got the CEL code.

A bad fuel pump or clogged filter will starve the engine thus leaning out the mixture. O2 sensor is what the computer uses to change the air/fuel ratio. So if it can't richen the mixture due to insufficient supply of fuel it thinks that the sensor is malfunctioning thus throwing the code for O2 sensor.
